Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie Stays
Active with Bella Union Label
Names new album after the Hoosier State
Nitsuh Abebe reports:
After a few years spent co-running the Bella Union label and
producing a few too many bands for a guy with such a limited sonic range,
Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie is, thankfully, back making his own music.
Violet Indiana, a duo consisting of Guthrie & Mono vocalist Siobhan de Mare,
^^^^
will release their debut EP, Choke, through Bella Union on October 23rd,
with a full-length to follow.
As for the sound, take your pick of references: the Julee Cruise
bits from "Twin Peaks," or Sugarplant covering Mojave 3. Either
works for this particular pseudo-journalist. The duo previewed
some material at South by Southwest, and found time for a
surprisingly amusing interview with Hybrid, in which Guthrie
can't seem to decide whether he wants to talk seriously about
his emotional health or make claims about Mono being named
"after that well-known disease."
In other Bella Union news, the Bella Union Series 7 will be
launched next month with the release of the self-titled debut
from Gwei-Lo. Guthrie and fellow labelhead Simon Raymonde
reveal their numerological tendencies with this one. The series
will be comprised of seven instrumental CDs, recorded by seven
different artists, all featuring, yes, seven tracks. The series will
be released over the next 18 (not seven) months, by which time
the label will have fully canceled out the number of the beast.
