Milan defeat:
Player-by-player analysis
02.10.2002 | A disciplined team performance was not enough for Bayern on
Tuesday evening against AC Milan, as the Italian visitors secured a fortunate
2-1 victory which leaves the Munich side's hopes of qualifying for the second
group stage hanging by a thread. Giovane Elber and Michael Ballack starred in
defeat for the 2001 trophy winners.
Oliver Kahn: Life can be tough for a goalkeeper: had to deal with three shots
on target, picked two from the back of his net. Not asked to make a single
save in the first 45 minutes, but it was a different story after the break.
The Italians' first decent chance went in, and then the Germany captain kept
his team in the game with a fine save. Caught wrong-footed for the winner.
Owen Hargreaves: Started in the back four but quickly moved to defensive
midfield to break up Rui Costa and Clarence Seedorf's cunning interplay. The
England international was reasonably successful, suffering increasing problems
with the tricky Portuguese ball artist. A little hurried going forward and his
ball control let him down on occasion. Brought a good save from visiting keeper
Dida just before half-time.
Robert Kovac: The Croatian stood firm in a back three with Linke, but had less
to do than his colleague. Took over Inzaghi when Linke was elsewhere and ran
into increasing trouble with the in-form striker. Missed a tackle on Serginho
for the Italians' second, looked short of the high standards set last season.
Thomas Linke: Something of a tragic hero on the evening: strong in the tackle,
great in the air, closed out Inzaghi for most of the game. But made two
positioning errors - and Inzaghi scored on both occasions.
Michael Tarnat: "Mr Reliable" in the left-back position. Did not put a foot
wrong in defence, frequently got forward, but not his best night in terms of
crosses. Came off for tactical reasons shortly before the end.
Hasan Salihamidzic: Visible improvement over his last couple of games. Plenty
of activity early on, looked dangerous down the right side. Got through a lot
of work at the back, but missed a challenge on Seedorf for Milan's opener. But
pulled himself together and put over the cross for Pizarro's strike.
Jens Jeremies: Renewed acquaintances with Rivaldo almost three months to the
day after the World Cup final. Definitely won on points against the Brazilian
superstar - but lost his man for the visitors' opener. However, a strong
performance overall.
Michael Ballack: Bayern's central distribution point, silky movement, went
looking for the ball and tackled hard. Unlucky with his long range shooting,
and also with close-range headers. It didn't want to go in on the night.
Ze Roberto: Still way short of his best form. Worked hard in all areas,
especially in his defensive duties and got stuck in. But lacks self-confidence
at the present time, evidenced by his weak shooting. An up-and-down second
half, unable to impose himself consistently on the play.
Claudio Pizarro: Not the Peruvian's best evening. Covered a huge amount of
ground and tried to get things going up front, but his control let him down
time and again. Tried to go solo in vain - but showed his full potential with
a super equaliser on 54 minutes. Could do better!
Giovane Elber: A great display from the Brazilian, marked in turn by Maldini
and Nesta. Always on the move, frequently took up position out on the flanks.
Took a lot of high balls in the first half, but came off best against the
Milan defence both in the air and on the ground. Just one thing counted against
him on the evening: he didn't hit the target.
Alexander Zickler: Replaced Tarnat in the 86th minute, but too late to turn the
game.
