14.11.2002 | Ottmar Hitzfeld had declared Bayern's
last Champions' League outing as an opportunity for
the club's second string - and it was the players
more usually accustomed to a reserve role who turned
on the style in an exciting 3-3 draw with RC Lens.
Midfielder Niko Kovac stood out on the night, along
with two up and coming young hopefuls, Markus Feulner
and 18 year-old debutant Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Stefan Wessels:
You had to feel a trace of pity for the 23 year-old,
twiddled his thumbs for the first 20 minutes - and then
conceding an own goal. Could do nothing about all three
Lens strikes, otherwise a solid performance.
Bixente Lizarazu:
Continued progress back to his best form. The Lens game
was another step forward, defensively excellent, although
his single mistake led to the first goal. A little wayward
in his shooting.
Robert Kovac:
Improving with every game after a disastrous dip in form.
Avoided the mistakes which have spoiled his central defensive
performances recently.
Thomas Linke:
The veteran looked as solid as usual for long periods,
excellent in the air and good positioning as always.
Hasan Salihamidzic:
"Brazzo" took over the right side of the back four, and
quickly settled in to his new duties. Unsurprisingly looked
at his best going forward, worked well together with Markus
Feulner, and got on the scoresheet after 18 minutes thanks
to Lens keeper Warmuz' catastrophic error. Lost concentration
at the end to let in Blanchard for the equaliser.
Thorsten Fink:
A game to forget for the veteran hard man. Never got to grips
with the situation in defensive midfield, "crowned" his
performance with a 20th minute own goal.
Niko Kovac:
The Croatian has waited a long time for a first-team opportunity,
and seized it with both hands: on just six minutes, twisted and
turned his way around two defenders before driving home
brilliantly to put his side in the lead. Lively throughout
and made his mark on the match. One of Bayern's best on the
night.
Mehmet Scholl:
Captain for the night in the absence of Oliver Kahn and Giovane
Elber. Typically precise free-kicks and corners, decent passing
and some pleasing trickery. Went off after 70 good minutes.
Marcus Feulner:
A young man who came of age. Filled the inside right position
with constant vigour, showed no respect for the French side's
experienced defensive line, exuded confidence and the ability
to surprise. Caused the visitors no end of trouble down the
right hand side, crowned a super display with his first
professional goal on 87 minutes. What a day for the youngster:
the crowd chanted his name as he left the field in the last
minute.
Alexander Zickler:
The Germany international was out of luck, looking a yard slow
and a shade imprecise in his lay offs. But won plenty in the air,
without ever looking like scoring.
Claudio Pizarro:
The Peruvian tried his best in a classic centre-forward
position, but squandered a fine chance after 18 minutes.
Sustained a thigh injury in a collision and left the
action at half-time.
Giovane Elber:
Replaced Pizarro at half-time, unleashed a mighty 25 metre
drive against the post just five minutes later. Unlucky in
time added on with a delicate lob.
Bastian Schweinsteiger:
The kind of display that will be talked about for years.
The 18 year-old made his professional debut with 20 minutes
remaining, showed no trace of nerves and played a couple of
super through balls. Then capped the lot with a brilliant
solo build up for Feulner's goal.
Philip Lahm:
Another young hopeful, will be able to tell his grandchildren
he made his professional debut in the Champions' League
