Rising stars
Great stuff from young ' uns
14.11.2002 | Most of the sparse crowd which attended Bayern's final
Champions' League outing against RC Lens will probably not recall much
about the game in a few years' time. But for three young Bayern stars
there will be specially fond memories of an otherwise meaningless fixture.
Sebastian Schweinsteiger, Philip Lahm and Markus Feulner enjoyed the biggest
days of their young football careers. "I'm delighted we have such good
players coming through our youth system," Ottmar Hitzfeld said afterwards.
Feulner, with a handful of professional appearances already under his
belt, chalked up his first ever senior goal in a Bayern shirt, after the
20 year-old put his side 3-2 up in the 87th minute. "But I'd have preferred
to win and not score a goal," the up and coming midfielder told journalists
afterwards.
"Feulner took his chance. He played well and proved himself at a European
level," Hitzfeld said, in what for him amounted to fervent praise. "He put
himself about very effectively, but still needs to show he can hack it in
the reserves. And he's not quite there at the moment," the coach continued,
making clear he expects more from the talented right-sided player.
The 20 year-old Feulner had 18 year-old Bastian Schweinsteiger to thank for
the chance to register his first goal. Schweinsteiger has trained with
the professional squad a grant total of twice, but got his big moment on
76 minutes after Hitzfeld brought Mehmet Scholl off and sent the youth on.
The versatile striker, a Beckham and Zidane fan, thus made his first-team
debut in Europe's elite football competition.
"Play like you do for the reserves, Play as well as you can," Hitzfeld said
as the youngster took the field. Just 11 minutes later he was deceiving
Cameroon captain Rigobert Song with a lovely piece of trickery, and placed a
precise right wing cross on Giovane Elber's head. The Brazilian hit the bar,
and Feulner forced home the rebound.
"Basti Schweinsteiger came on and did really well, he laid on the goal. You
can see the potential we have in our youths. Philip Lahm shows no
nerves too, and we should be truly thankful we have such excellent players
in our reserves," veteran Thorsten Fink said, expressing his admiration for
the "Young 'uns".
Lahm also made a first appearance for the senior side right at the end. "It
was really special getting on the pitch in this stadium," the defender said,
just three days after his 19th birthday. And just being with the squad the
night before in their hotel was "really extraordinary," he added.
Team-mate Schweinsteiger, who had initially refused to believe he had been
called up, agreed: "I was a bit nervous and really didn't know what to do.
You just watch and see how the professionals do it," the young hopeful
explained.
