Roque romps home in December
04.01.2003 | Roque Santa Cruz has enjoyed a perfect start to
the new year after topping December's poll for Bayern Player
of the Month, banishing World Cup runners up Oliver Kahn and
Michael Ballack to second and third places.
"I'm really happy about this award and would like to thank all
the fans who voted for me," Roque said afterwards. The teen
idol's victory could hardly be described as a surprise, however:
the player nicknamed "Baby Gol" hit peak form for his club in
the weeks leading up to the mid-season break.
The Paraguayan international entered the running late this term,
making his first appearance on 19 October in a 2-1 victory away
to Hansa Rostock after a serious ankle injury had sidelined him
for three long months.
Just two weeks later Bayern were eliminated from the Champions'
League in La Coruna, but the striker at least had the consolation
of a first goal of the season. Then, four days later, Santa Cruz
made the starting line-up for the first time, although Bayern fell
to defeat in Bremen.
Up to the winter break the player fired a further six goals and
showed he possesses the strong nerves demanded by top flight football.
Santa Cruz struck the final and decisive penalty in the DFB Cup
shoot-out win over Schalke, securing his side a berth in the quarter-
finals.
This run of form has now been recognised by the fans - but the club has
taken note too. Shortly before Christmas, Roque signed a two-year
extension to his current deal, keeping him at Bayern until summer 2006.
It is unlikely to be the last time the teen idol claims the Player of
the Month award.
The full results for December will be published in the match programme
when Bayern entertain Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of January.
