Kahn:
Enjoying the game again
07.01.2003 | After a troubled first half of the season, with
an early dip in form followed by a couple of minor disciplinary
incidents, Oliver Kahn is back to his imperious best. Speaking
at a press conference at Bayern's Marbella training camp, the
Germany keeper appeared cheerful and relaxed, and said he was
"totally enjoying" his football again.
The Bayern captain suffered something of a rough ride in the
period following a string of outstanding displays at the World
Cup, a sustained level of performance he himself described as
"a labour of Hercules. After expending that kind of energy, who
wouldn't fall into a rut?" he said. "But looking at the overall
picture, I'm entirely satisfied with my performance this season.
I've been in extremely good form for the whole of the last two
months," he continued, insisting his poor run had to be seen in
context.
Kahn has rediscovered his laid-back attitude and sense of humour,
evidenced by his reaction to a survey carried out by specialist
weekly kicker, in which his fellow professionals rated him only
third best keeper behind rivals Jens Lehmann (Borussia Dortmund)
and Simon Jentzsch (1860 Munich). "But I've let in fewer goals
than Lehmann," he insisted - a curious observation at first sight,
as Dortmund have the best defence in the league with only 13 goals
against, ahead of Bayern and Schalke 04 on 14. But, Kahn said
self-deprecatingly: "For the 3-3 draw with Hanover, I wasn't in goal,
I was playing golf."
The 33 year-old finally found the time he desperately needed to
recharge his batteries during the Christmas break, and says he is
now focusing his attention on the championship and the DFB Cup,
trophies which already have Bayern's name on them, in his view:
"It's much easier to concentrate on our goals now. We only have one
game a week most of the time, and our determination should be total."
The giant netminder claimed he was not at all worried by closest
rivals Dortmund and Bremen: "We're six points ahead and everything's
in our own hands."
Kahn insisted Bayern's early exit from the Champions' League was long
forgotten, and in fact has thrown up one or two positives. "Ottmar
Hitzfeld has at last been given the opportunity to push through his
rebuilding programme in training," the keeper claimed.
And this would be "an exceptionally important factor" over the next
few seasons, as Kahn voiced his desire to shine on the European stage
again next term: "Big clubs always go through very, very tough rebuilding
phases. We'll be back with a vengeance next season, I'm in no doubt at all."
