Ankle problems end Ziege's career

Former German international Christian Ziege has been forced to retire from
professional football at the age of 33 due to a persistent ankle injury.
Persistent problem
The VfL Borussia Monchengladbach captain has made just 13 appearances for
the Bundesliga club since joining from Tottenham Hotspur FC in summer 2004.
"My playing career is over," said Ziege.
"I have spoken to our physio, Dr Hertl, and he sees it the same - the ankle
just can't cope with football anymore. That is something I have to accept.
Therefore, the club and I have come to the decision to call it a day."
Trophy-laden career
Ziege has had a highly successful career, winning two German titles and the
UEFA Cup with FC Bayern Munchen, before a move to AC Milan brought the Serie
A championship. Ziege switched to Middlesbrough FC in 1999 and went on to
play for Liverpool FC. However, his biggest achievement came in 1996 when
he helped Germany to UEFA European Championship glory.
