Van der Vaart breaks his ankle

Hamburger SV's Dutch international forward Rafael van der Vaart
will be sidelined until the new year after breaking his ankle and
straining ligaments in his left foot.
'Sidelined for at least two months'
The injury occurred during Saturday's 3-1 win against 1. FC Koln,
and the German club's doctor, Gerold Schwartz, said: "We expect him
to be missing for at least two months." The 22-year-old former AFC
Ajax player will sit out Hamburg's remaining UEFA Cup Group A game
against SK Slavia Praha on 15 December, as well as their last two
Bundesliga matches of 2005 – against Hertha BSC Berlin and Werder Bremen.
Winter break
Van der Vaart will hope to coincide his return as close as possible
to the resumption of the Bundesliga season after the winter break,
on the weekend of 28/29 January. Coach Thomas Doll said: "I am very
sorry for Rafael. Hopefully he will recover quickly."
