21.04.2004 | The world of German football was rocked at the weekend as Bixente
Lizarazu announced he would be leaving Bayern this summer. "I've decided to
end my time at Bayern after this season," the France international told sports
daily L'Equipe.
The left-back's statement surprised not only the fans but also the rest of the
players, none of whom were expecting the Lizarazu era to end just yet.
Right-back Willy Sagnol indicated his disappointment his fellow countryman's
decision to call time on his Bayern career: "Liza has the quality to help
Bayern at the highest level for at least another season," the player said.
Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld made no attempt to hide his dismay at losing the
world-class star. "I've grown very close to Bixente, he's been a foundation
stone of our success and he's a total professional," the head coach declared.
But the player, capped 92 times by France, insisted his departure from the
Sabener Strasse was a done deal. "For the first time in seven years we've been
unable to agree on a shared target," the 34 year-old said after failing to
agree new terms with the German champions.
General manager Uli Hoenes, charged with securing the long-term future of the
club, said the decision to let Lizarazu leave had not been an easy one, but the
precarious financial situation in professional football had forced the club to
tighten its belt. "We can't start making exceptions to our own rules,
especially for our top earners like Lizarazu. It's the right time to lay down
a marker," Hoenes told the tz newspaper.
"Tobias Rau and Hasan Salihamidzic will have to fill the gap," the senior offic
ial continued, "we're not going out to buy another replacement for Lizarazu."
Utterly professional until the last, Lizarazu agreed it would be painful
leaving Munich, but he harboured no grudge against the club where he has become
one of the world's most decorated players. "I'm proud of my time in Munich and
I've won everything there is to win here," the World Cup and European
Championship winner declared.
The 34 year-old is now looking for a new club as he is not ready to hang up his
boots just yet. "My abilities and my motivation are still good, so I intend to
pursue new sporting goals and use my experience to help another club," he said
.
