| Michael Ballack's emergence as a midfielder of truly international
class was confirmed last season by a series of thrilling displays for
Bayer Leverkusen, as he inspired the Rhineland outfit to upset some of
Europe's biggest names and run Borussia Dortmund desperately close for
the Bundesliga title.
But like his former club, the player was in danger of getting stuck
with the tag of perennial underachiever.
"I've come so close so often, now I want to win a few honours at last,"
the 26 year-old exclusively told FCB.de,
reflecting on his first week at Bayern and what it will take to reach
peak fitness ahead of the new term.
FCB.de:
Michael, you made your debut for Bayern against SC Verl.
Are you happy with the 45 minutes you were on the field?
Michael Ballack:
"I'm happy to have played again for the first time
since my holiday, and I've pulled on a Bayern shirt for the first time.
It's naturally tough to get back into it at the start, especially the
physical side of things, I noticed that at once. One half was quite enough,
I've only done three days' training after all. But it was perfectly OK as
a starting point."
FCB.de:
After a week at the club, what are your first impressions of Bayern?
Ballack:
"My first impression is highly positive.
The club is brilliantly organised from top-to-bottom.
Compared with Leverkusen, the daily interest from the fans and the media
is considerably higher. I've been pleased with the reception given me by
my team-mates, I've had no problems fitting in up to now.
I haven't had a chance to get to know the city yet, but that will happen soon."
FCB.de:
You had a three-week holiday, and you have just under three weeks training
time before the first league game.
Is that enough to get over last season, and on the other hand, to get ready
for the new one?
Ballack:
"As we had to go through the stress of moving to Munich, we were actually
only away for two weeks. That wasn't a lot for a full recovery.
But there's nothing we can do about the fixture list. Only time will tell
whether three weeks are enough to get fully fit.
The other players are further ahead, of course. Those of us who took part in
the World Cup need to try and catch up as quickly as we can in the time that
remains, make sure we stay in touch, which is definitely possible if we work
and concentrate hard in training.
Anyway, you only reach peak fitness by playing. You're only 100 percent ready
after two or three league matches."
FCB.de:
Towards the end of last season you were carrying a foot injury.
Has that cleared up in the meantime?
Ballack:
"I've noticed nothing in training up to now, it must have cleared up during
my three-week holiday."
FCB.de:
In terms of what you want to achieve at Bayern - there's not a lot left
to say,is there?
Ballack:
"I've come so close so often, now I want to win a few honours at last.
I intend to play my part in Bayern continuing the stunning successes of
the last few years.
We have an outstanding team with a number of star players, so even someone
like myself has to prove himself again."
FCB.de:
How do you think Bayer Leverkusen will do next term?
Ballack:
"Even though Ze Roberto and I have left, they're still an excellent team.
Of course, it will be very difficult for them to do as well as last season.
But Bayer have a superb coach in Toppmoller, and he will certainly do a good
job of integrating all the new young players who have arrived in Leverkusen.
So I'm assuming Leverkusen will be there or thereabouts at the top again."
FCB.de:
What are you looking forward to most at the moment:
the birth of your second child, or the new season with Bayern?
Ballack:
"I'm very excited about both. The start of the Bundesliga season comes first,
so maybe at the moment I'm a little more worked up about running out in a
Bayern jersey for the first time. But the anticipation surrounding the birth
is getting stronger day-by-day. The baby is expected at the end of September,
but of course you never know if it will actually happen then."
