GER-MEX: Players' Quotes
29 June 2005
by FIFAworldcup.com
Michael Ballack (Anheuser Busch Man of the Match):
Mexico were a very good team but we beat them. That will give us confidence
over the coming months. I am proud of my team. We have scored an incredible
number of goals over the tournament but we have also conceded a lot. Overall,
we have only come up short against Brazil. The team has great attacking
potential and we have managed to realise that. It is always a great pleasure
for me to return to my home region. The fans are incredible and know
instinctively when the team needs their support.
Oliver Kahn (GER):
I am very happy with my performances because we have won both games. However,
we still have to work at our defensive play. This Confederations Cup was a
tournament of all-out attack. We will not win with that tactic at the FIFA
World Cup next year. But we still have a year to go and we are aware of our
shortcomings. The young players in particular have to learn to handle the
boisterous atmosphere in the stadiums. The fans are always pressing them
forwards which can make the game a little hurried.
Lukas Podolski (GER):
All in all it was a great game. We had said among ourselves that we were
taking this game seriously and wanted to win. I have not seen my goal on TV
but I think it was unstoppable. The strike partnership with Hanke worked
well. He really got stuck in. The medal will go to my parents like all of my
trophies. It is very important to me.
Robert Huth (GER):
After the long, hard weeks in the build-up, that was a fantastic outcome. We
knew the Mexicans would be difficult opponents, but in the end we did enough.
Even with ten men we felt we could win because the Mexicans had already
played extra-time in one of their matches. I could have scored in the first
half, but I redeemed myself. All of a sudden the ball was in front of me. I
met it and it went in.
Mike Hanke (GER):
I am bitterly disappointed to have been sent off, especially in my first
start. The coach has told me to keep my head up and I will have other
chances. I went in too aggressively for the challenge that earned me the red
card, but I did not make contact. It was no more than a yellow. I was really
hoping that the team could win the match with ten men and I am very grateful
and proud that they earned the victory so spectacularly.
Bastian Schweinsteiger (GER):
We had to work harder and defend more when we went a man down but it paid
off. Obviously there was an element of luck to our success but I have to
praise Andreas Hinkel. That pass was top drawer. Thank you.
Sebastian Deisler (GER):
It was a tense, nerve-wracking game – we should not be conceding in the 86th
minute. It is very difficult to play against a team like Mexico with ten men
for so long, so hats off to our team!
Bernd Schneider (GER):
To concede that many goals in a tournament is a bit excessive. But it was a
good result today. The atmosphere here in Leipzig was fantastic again. Even
at difficult times the crowd got behind us and gave us additional energy in
extra-time. Thank you Leipzig!
