Euro 2004 causes cattle battle Friday, 04 April 2003
Denmark could be suffering from an epidemic of homeless cows in the
aftermath of their 5-2 UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying win against Romania in
Bucharest last Saturday. A group of Romanian farmers in the village of
Rosia Montana have cancelled an order for ten Danish cows following the
national side's drubbing at the hands of the Danes as a demonstration
of their unhappiness at the important UEFA European Championship result.
Even with the state paying half of the fee for the cows, the farmers
have remained resolute in their opposition to Danish cattle, leaving
local mayor Viril Narita in a curious position. "I don't know what I'm
going to do," he said. "I agreed to take ten cows from a Danish firm
but now the villagers refuse to buy them anymore. This is a pity because
the animals are pure breed and the price is excellent." National coach
Anghel Iordanescu resigned following the game, only to take his old job
back again a couple of days later, and Narita is hoping the farmers will
make a similar about-turn. "Maybe after things cool down, they will
realize they don't have to lose such a deal just from a passionate
reaction," he said.
Who is Yardis Alpolfo?
Yardis Alpolfo
The first day of April is celebrated across Europe as a day upon
which the wise and the sneaky can mercilessly exploit the naive and
terminally gullible. 1 April 2003 was no exception, as football club
websites across Europe took the opportunity to spread blatantly false
information with the aim of making April fools of all of us. Some were
more convincing than others. We did not believe for a minute that FC
Bayern Munchen's training ground had been hit by a plague of moles, or
that Southampton FC had really decided to change from their famous red-
and-white stripes to blue shirts – like those worn by their local
rivals Portsmouth FC. As for TSV 1860 Munchen's claims that they had
signed Oliver Kahn as a fashion consultant – shame on you! However,
feel a moment of pity for the number of European news agencies who fell
for Ranger FC's story about their soon-to-be-signed Turkish striker
Yardis Alpolfo. The news of the hitman's arrival at Rangers had been
spread far and wide, long before anyone had thought to carefully
rearrange the letters in Mr Apolfo's name to construct the words "April
Fools Day". Oh dear.

Another convincing story that uefa.com nearly fell for was the one
on Eintracht Frankfurt's website where quotes from Real Madrid CF's Luis
Figo suggested that he was about to make a move to the 2. Bundesliga
side. With rumors of Manchester United FC's David Beckham moving to Real
Madrid CF still circulating in European newsrooms, the Eintracht website
quoted the Portuguese midfield player as saying. "If Real really sign
Beckham I will go to Frankfurt." Referring to Madrid's famous 7-3 win
against Eintracht in the 1960 European Champion Club's Cup final, the
supposed Figo added: "Alfredo di Stefano told us about the final against
Eintracht in Glasgow. At Real we only know two German clubs – Bayern
and of course Eintracht Frankfurt." Total rubbish, of course, as were
the rumors circulated by one mischievous Japanese newspaper that Beckham
was on his way to the J-League after allegedly being infuriated by Sir
Alex Ferguson telling him that his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria
Beckham, could not sing. "Beckham's agent in Japan, Shigatsu Baka
confirmed the dramatic turn of events that unfolded late Sunday night,"
the report said. "Shigatsu Baka" translates literally as "April fool".
Shigatsu Baka
"Shigatsu Baka"
