Mills String
Saltine has the support of Mike Mills

(3/21/00, 12 p.m. ET) - R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills stopped by a small club in
Austin, Texas on Saturday (March 18) to check out a set by noise-pop outfit
Saltine, the latest project from R.E.M. sideman and former Posies member Ken
Stringfellow. Mills stood about four rows back in the mostly nondescript Park
Ave. club, and bopped and sang along as the Seattle quartet blasted its way
through a 45-minute set for a crowd of several dozen gathered as part of the
South By Southwest Music Conference.
Longtime Patti Smith guitarist and collaborator Lenny Kaye was also reportedly
in attendance. Stringfellow will be joining Mills and the rest of R.E.M. in the
studio some time soon as the band prepares to record the follow-up to its 1998
effort, Up.
Meanwhile, Stringfellow will continue to pursue greater things for Saltine.
Currently, the band has one American release to its credit -- a seven-inch
single that came out earlier this year on the tiny Casa label.
