Bill Resurfaces
But not on an REM recording
Jam Music
Former REM drummer Bill Berry has resurfaced on a new charity CD benefiting
research into Tourette Syndrome.
Berry, who left REM in 1997 after he survived a brain aneurysm while on tour
with the group, will appear on "Welcome Companions," a record benefitting the
Tourette Syndrome Association of Georgia, organizers announced in a press
release.
In his first released music since leaving REM, Berry will play drums on three
songs backing singer Sherry Joyce. He also collaborated with former Sea Level
guitarist Davis Causey on an instrumental called "Riviera Nap." The CD will
also include appearances from a number of musicians from around REM's
hometown of Athens, GA.
The benefit is being organized by Athens area writer and musician Rick Fowler,
who has himself struggled with, and written about, Tourette Syndrome, a
neurological disorder that can cause embarrassing verbal outbursts and
physical twitches.
Berry's relationship with Fowler and his cause dates back to 1998, when he
auctioned off his drums to support the charity.
The CD is to be released June 17 at the Tourette Syndrome Association benefit
concert at the Morton Theatre in Athens.
The disc is currently being completed at Full Moon Studios in Watkinsville,
GA. A full list of performers and CD sales information will be announced
May 1.
