5/21/00, 7 a.m. ET) - Drummer Joey Waronker looks like he's found a
home with R.E.M., after having been Beck's skin-basher earlier in his career.
The in-demand drummer is currently holed up with R.E.M. in a studio,
collaborating with the band on its next record. Waronker will also be R.E.M.'s
drummer on the subsequent tour.
Waronker says R.E.M.'s been writing and preparing songs since the last tour.
"And now, the songs are coming to life," he notes. "With all the pre-
production, everyone is geared up and very focused, which makes everything in
the studio go really smoothly."
Waronker also appears on Elliott Smith' latest album Figure 8.
Additionally, he contributed to Tonic's "You Wanted More" for the American Pie
soundtrack, and was tapped to contribute additional production to and remix
the Eels' "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues."
The drummer is also spreading his wings as a producer -- he recently twisted
knobs for Universal Records artist Marie Therese's upcoming album. He also
produced and composed the soundtrack for the film Chuck And Buck, which
debuted at the most recent Sundance Film Festival.
