CHART COMPILERS RULE OUT '...MIND' GAMES

POSH SPICE and TRUESTEPPERS' single 'OUT OF YOUR MIND' will not
face disciplinary action from chart compilers CIN despite
allegations that it had been bought in bulk from a record store
last week.
There were reports in UK tabloid The Sun of a "mystery woman"
buying 34 tapes of the single at a branch of Woolworths in
Hertfordshire.
The newspaper also reported earlier this week that magazine tycoon
Richard Desmond, a friend of Victoria Beckham, who guests on the
single along with Another Level's Dane Bowers, had given his staff
￡10 each and told them to go out and buy copies of the single from
chart-registered chain Our Price.
However, CIN said despite an investigation, they had discovered no
irregularities or any breach of the strict rules which govern which
singles enter the Top 40.
A spokesperson for CIN told nme.com this morning: "We had a call
from a newspaper last week saying they had reports from someone who
had witnessed multiple copies of the Truesteppers single being
purchased. We have investigated the claims and we can find no
evidence of chart-hyping having occurred. We have sophisticated
methods of preventing any kind of chart-hyping and if we had found
any irregularities, that store's sales would have automatically been
discounted from the chart. We are confident that nothing untoward
took place."
Meanwhile Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who performs vocals on the
Truesteppers' chart rival single 'Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)',
which beat the Posh collaboration to Number One on Sunday (August
20), has another battle on her hands this week in the form of the
mighty Madonna.
According to midweek chart reports, Madonna's 'Music' is still
behind 'Groovejet', which is on course to stay at the top of the
charts for a second week.
A spokesperson for Spiller and Sophie said it puts theaudience
frontwoman in a sticky situation, adding: "Madonna was the reason
Sophie got into pop music and she has cited her as her biggest
influence to this day."
