His personal life is a mystery that won't soon be solved. Chin-Feng Chen
talks about himself so rarely, it's almost as if he's hiding some sort of
secret. The truth is, he has a good reason for keeping quiet.

"I don't understand a lot of English," Chen said. "I don't know how to answer
some questions. The difficult part is the language, but I'm learning. I'm
getting better and better and feeling more comfortable here."

If there were such a thing as a franchise player at the Triple-A level, Chen
would be it for the 51s. A 26-year-old outfielder from Taiwan, he has played
three seasons in Las Vegas and holds the team's career home run record with 71.

"Is that a good thing to have? I don't know if I'd want to own any minor league
 records like that. That means you've been down here a long time," 51s manager
 Terry Kennedy said.

"But it's no slap on him. I think he is a major league prospect, at least he
is for me. I don't think he's a fourth or fifth outfielder. This is a guy
who's got to play."

Chen went 1-for-4 Saturday in the 51s' 11-10 victory over Sacramento at
Cashman Field.

Chen's stay in Las Vegas is nearing an end. He'll leave after Monday's game
to play for Taiwan in the Olympics and by the time he returns in late August,
the season will be winding down.

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta said Chen should be a
September call-up. Chen is out of options, too, so if he doesn't make the
Dodgers' roster next spring, another team will certainly claim him.

"I think Chen has done everything he possibly can to merit a spot in L.A.,
" DePodesta said. "He's played great down here. One of the reasons I wanted
to call him up this year whenever we had an opportunity was to find out a
little bit more about him at the major league level."

Chen has been promoted to the Dodgers twice this season, but was used
sparingly. He played in six games and went hitless in seven at-bats.

He's too polite to say he's irritated by not getting more of a look.

"I don't think about that too much. It's not my job. I've just got to play
baseball here every day," Chen said. "Every year is getting better, a little
bit."

He's hitting .304 with 19 homers, 64 RBIs and six stolen bases for the 51s,
and Kennedy will miss that production.

"I'd like to see Chen get a chance. I don't know if it's going to be with us,
" Kennedy said. "He's an above-average runner and a good outfielder. He's
streaky like a power hitter. He'll look like he can't hit anything and then
he catches fire."

Las Vegas catcher Koyie Hill is one of Chen's closest friends on the team and
sees a more outgoing side of him.

"If you get to know him, he's one of the best guys in the clubhouse. He's
very funny, he's very good to kid around with and he's good giving it back to
you, too," Hill said.

"This is the first year he's really kind of come out of his shell as much as
he has. His personality is really showing."
