Chin-lung Hu literally had trouble seeing the ball last season.
Saturday, he was selected the Dodgers' minor league player of the
year.
Hu, the most valuable player of the Futures Game, was a September
call-up to the big league club and hit his first major league home
run Sept. 11. The 23-year-old Taiwanese shortstop hit .325 with 14
home runs in a combined 127 games at double-A Jacksonville and triple-
-A Las Vegas.
He hit only .256 at Jacksonville last year, something he blamed on
blurry vision in his right eye.
"I couldn't see the ball," Hu said, adding that he often guessed where
the ball was when swinging the bat.
He tried wearing contact lenses, but that didn't work. He said that
because of his poor vision he took more pitches, which led to him
walking 49 times.
Hu's vision recovered with rest and his walk total declined to 32 this
season.
