Chien-Ming Wang wasn't perfect, not even close, and the Yankees didn't give
him much help Thursday, either.
After a string of well-played games, Thursday's 14-2 loss to the Rangers was
a real stinker for the Yankees, who fell back under .500 at 16-17 before
beginning a nine-game road trip that starts in Seattle and ends at Shea
Stadium.
Wang, who threw 7 1/3 perfect innings in his previous start, allowed 11 hits
and seven runs in 61/3 innings. He was sabotaged when Jorge Posada and Alex
Rodriguez botched a rundown play in the fifth inning; the embarrassing
misplay led to three runs in what had been a 1-1 game.
"We don't mess up that fifth inning and we're still locked in a close
ballgame," manager Joe Torre said. "We thought we gave away three runs, but
certainly 4-1 doesn't make you throw up your hands and say we can't win this
game. But we didn't get good relief pitching."
The Rangers, who snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Yankees,
went on to bang out 16 hits. They made it uglier for the Yankees in the later
innings, scoring three in the seventh to knock out Wang (1-3) and seven in
the eighth against Luis Vizcaino and Sean Henn.
"It was one of those days," Derek Jeter said. "They pretty much killed us."
Torre partially threw up the white flag when he put Miguel Cairo in leftfield
in the eighth inning (he also wanted to give Johnny Damon's sore calves a few
innings off). The sight of Cairo fighting the sun and trying to run down Mark
Teixeira's long drive to left-center in the eighth -- it didn't seem like a
fair fight for the career infielder -- kind of summed up the afternoon. The
ball fell for a double, one of three on the day for Teixeira (4-for-5, three
RBIs, three runs).
Sammy Sosa had three hits and two RBIs for the Rangers and former Met Victor
Diaz had a pinch-hit grand slam against Henn in the eighth to complete the
carnage.
Considering the final score, it's hard to imagine the game was tied when
Gerald Laird (3-for-5) tripled to rightfield to lead off the fifth, a drive
Bobby Abreu didn't play well near the wall. He was still at third with one
out when Brad Wilkerson hit a grounder to Rodriguez, who threw to Posada for
what should have been an easy out.
But Laird stopped and headed back toward third. Posada ran him back a little,
but not far enough, and threw high to A-Rod as Laird reversed course. With
Wang waiting at home, Rodriguez chose to chase Laird instead of throwing.
Rodriguez and Laird both dived headfirst into the plate, with Laird's left
hand slapping the base before A-Rod could apply the tag.
Posada said he threw when he did because "Alex called for the ball."
Rodriguez, who had a bruise on his chin from Laird's shoe, didn't want to
talk about it, saying, "I have no idea. That was so long ago. 14-2."
Torre assigned blame to both Posada and Rodriguez after watching the play in
his office after the game,
"Jorgie, he's got to get the guy moving this way," he said, meaning third
base. "And Alex, where he was, probably should have given the ball up to the
pitcher at the plate. We did it wrong, let's put it that way. I don't think
you can point a finger at anybody. We just screwed it up."
A pair of RBI singles by Teixeira -- Abreu's wide throw home wasn't cut off
as Wilkerson scored easily, allowing Teixeira to take second -- and Sosa
followed, and the Rangers had a 4-1 lead and then a 7-1 lead and then a 14-2
lead.
The Yankees' offense took a rare day off -- one run on Melky Cabrera's first
home run of the season and another on an error -- and Yankee Stadium, packed
with 52,147 fans at the start, was a ghost town by the time Eric Gagne
retired Cabrera for the final out to end a 4-3 homestand.
A 5-2 homestand would have been even better, especially with rookies Darrell
Rasner and Matt DeSalvo starting Friday night and Saturday night.
"It's easy to shake off because we know we're better than this," Torre said.
"We've had a bigger sampling than this game."
