Yankees drop game, set to Angels
Wang settles down, but offense held to one run
NEW YORK -- There are different methods of venting frustration: One of the
pillars in the Yankees' clubhouse is scarred with crumbling plaster, with the
indentation of a bat barrel clearly visible.
The Yankees chose a different avenue for letting off steam on Saturday, taking
aim at home-plate umpire Jeff Nelson for his called strikeout of Bobby Abreu,
ending their 3-1 loss to the Angels and stranding the tying runs on base.
The events turned manager Joe Torre's tone uncharacteristically testy, who
called the play "sad" and a "joke" while saying that the Yankees wished Abreu
at least could have determined his own fate.
"When you literally take the bat out of somebody's hands, you can't do anything
about it," Torre said. "It's not strike one. It's not strike two. It's strike
three."
The Yankees didn't muster much against Angels starter Kelvim Escobar -- who
limited the damage to one run over seven innings -- and waited until the ninth
inning to mount a late-afternoon rally.
Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez quickly recorded the first two outs in the
ninth, striking out Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano before Johnny Damon ripped
a pinch-hit single and took second base on defensive indifference.
Damon
Melky Cabrera legged out an infield single off the glove of second baseman
Howie Kendrick, placing runners on the corners for Abreu.
註: runners on the corners就是一三壘有人。
The right fielder had a 1-2 count when Nelson rang him up on a pitch that
Torre described as being in the other batter's box. Abreu engaged in a heated
argument with Nelson, who talked back to the outfielder and told him, in
Abreu's words, that it had been a good pitch.
Abreu
註: ring him up即為三振。
Abreu spiked his batting helmet to the grass behind home plate before being
escorted off the playing field by teammates.
Abreu
"I thought it was way, way, way away," Abreu said. "In that situation you have
to be sure which one is a ball and which one is a strike. That one is way off
the plate."
Abreu -- who was 1-for-5 in the game with three strikeouts -- said that he had
issues with Nelson's strike zone all afternoon, and could not remember being
more livid after a game.
"He was so inconsistent," Abreu said. "He called the high pitch, the low
pitch, away. It's like you have to go over and swing at everything, pretty
much."
Having watched the pitch sequence unfold from third base, Damon said that Abreu
had a right to be upset.
"He shouldn't be [happy]," Damon said. "That's the way things have been going
around here, I guess."
Though the Yankees had 26 outs to play with before the Abreu strikeout --
Torre said he didn't want to pin that singular play as the reason they lost --
some, like Damon, were left to wonder what might have happened if Abreu had
been given another pitch to hit.
"We had a real good chance," Damon said. "Bobby's been swinging the bat much
better. Unfortunately, they called strike three. He looked ready, but it's
real tough to hit a pitch that's outside."
The final out was indicative of the Yankees' frustrations as they continue to
dig out from a deficit to the American League East-leading Red Sox. The loss
dropped the Yankees to five games under .500, the third time they have reached
that season-low point.
As catcher Jorge Posada addressed reporters following the game, he answered a
few questions before bolting for an exit, saying, "See you guys tomorrow. This
is a lot of fun, talking about the same [stuff] over and over."
Chien-Ming Wang started for New York and experienced a rough beginning,
serving up three runs in the first before blanking the Angels the rest of the
way in his second eight-inning performance of the year.
Even with a season-high six strikeouts in a six-hit, four-walk performance
before handing the ball off to Mariano Rivera for the ninth inning, Wang
accepted responsibility for the Yankees' loss.
"If I don't give up three runs, the team would have had a chance to win,"
Wang said.
If I "didn't" give up three runs....
Wang couldn't find a consistent release point in the first inning and left
his pitches up, and the Angels jumped out early. Reggie Willits walked and
Vladimir Guerrero stroked a one-out single before Gary Matthews Jr. came
through with a two-run triple to left-center. Casey Kotchman followed with a
run-scoring single to left to complete the opening barrage.
Posada and pitching coach Ron Guidry took Wang aside in the dugout following
the three-run first and reminded him to keep his arm up as he delivered pitches.
。
"For the first three innings, [Wang] had trouble locating, and then after
that he just dug in," Torre said. "He's special. There's no question. He's not
going to back off; he's going to keep fighting you, and he certainly put
himself in a position to stop the damage and try to win a ballgame."
Wang stranded the bases loaded in the second and allowed a leadoff double to
Kotchman in the third before retiring 17 of the next 19 batters to close out
his day.
"He pitched a [heck] of a ballgame," Posada said. "He was tough all day. We
had guys on base, but we couldn't score."
The Yankees cracked through against Escobar in the fourth. Alex Rodriguez
opened the inning with a single, stole second and went to third on a groundout
before coming home on Doug Mientkiewicz's opposite-field hit with two outs.
But that was all the Yankees would manage against Escobar, who limited New
York to six hits in a seven-inning, eight-strikeout performance.
Escobar walked just one in the 103-pitch effort and also hit a batter before
yielding to Scot Shields for the eighth inning.
"You can't look at the standings. Who cares about the standings?" said Derek
Jeter, whose hitting streak came to an end after an 0-for-4 day. "You have to
try to find ways to win games, because ... if you don't win, you're not gaining
any ground. We have to worry about ourselves."
