Webb opens series with Yanks
Arizona (37-27) at New York (30-31), Tuesday, 4:05 p.m. MST
By Michael Schwartz / MLB.com
Randy Johnson has a lesson for his younger teammates who have never played
at Yankee Stadium: Enjoy it, but don't be intimidated.
"The biggest thing is it will be a learning experience for a lot of these
young people, especially to go into Yankee Stadium and stand up to the big
boys," said Johnson, who pitched in New York the past two seasons.
Many of his teammates were not even drafted the last time Arizona played
in the historic stadium, with the D-backs making their first trip to the
Bronx since June 10-12, 2002. Arizona has not matched up with the Yankees
since June 15-17, 2004, at Chase Field.
Manager Bob Melvin said his team will feel the mystique of the stadium
when the players take the field, but he does not want to say much about
it so as not to freak them out.
He said playing the Mets at Shea Stadium last week could help a little bit,
but it's a little different because Yankee Stadium is like a museum.
"When you talk about some of the places, Fenway Park, so forth and so on,
Yankee Stadium certainly stands out," Melvin said. "I don't know that
Shea has that type of mystique, but you get used to the type of crowd
that you're going to see in Yankee Stadium, it's just a little different
playing in the stadium itself."
Brandon Webb, who will start Tuesday's game against Chien-Ming Wang,
is excited for his first outing at Yankee Stadium.
"I've never been there, never played there," Webb said. "I faced them here
a couple years ago before the season started in an exhibition game or
whatever, so that was cool, but this will be different, [a] big stage.
Shea's similar, I don't think it's to the scale that Yankee Stadium will
be, so it will be a little bit different, but it will be pretty exciting."
Webb plans to wander around the stadium on Arizona's off-day Monday so as
to get the distractions out of his head when he takes the mound Tuesday
against the Yankees, who have won six in a row.
Webb can also take solace that he has dominated in his career when pitching
in New York. He has allowed just one earned run in 29 innings (0.31 ERA)
in going 2-1 at Shea.
"I'm going to take the fact that I'm pitching well there in New York,"
Webb said. "Same weather, so hopefully it will carry over across the city
a little bit."
He will be faced by a similar pitcher in Wang, who also relies heavily
on a sinker.
"I'd say he's 90 percent [sinking] fastballs as well a lot of the time,
so he's inducing a lot of ground balls from that respect," Webb said. "He
throws harder than I do a little bit, but that's about the main difference."
Pitching matchup
ARI: RHP Brandon Webb (6-3, 3.13 ERA)
Webb has pitched great his last three starts, compiling a 3-0 record with
a 0.82 ERA in that time. He has pitched 16 1/3 consecutive scoreless
innings over that stretch. Webb shut out San Francisco over seven innings
Wednesday, giving up six hits and striking out seven to get the win.
Webb lost his only career start against the Yankees, giving up three runs
(two earned) on seven hits in five innings in 2004 at Chase Field.
NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (5-4, 3.73 ERA)
Wang has won four of his last five outings, including Wednesday's
complete-game victory over the White Sox. In that outing he allowed
one run on five hits and struck out four, while throwing 104 pitches.
He notched his third-career complete game and the team's first
complete-game victory since he did it last July. Wang's sinker was
"exploding" in the contest, according to manager Joe Torre, and his
slider wasn't too bad either. Wang mixed his pitches well, throwing in
some curves, to shut down the White Sox. Wang has never faced the D-backs.
Player to watch
It'll be interesting to see Webb face off against Derek Jeter. Jeter
singled off Webb twice in 2004, but fanned against him in last year's
All-Star Game.
