WANG, ABREU PUSH BOMBERS TO .500 MARK

June 13, 2007 -- Unleash the tickertape and pop a few champagne corks. Or is
that not considered protocol for celebrating your rise to .500?
For the Yankees, last night's 4-1 victory over the Diamondbacks at the
Stadium represented a baby step. After more than a month staring at a losing
record, Joe Torre's crew finally broke even, and perhaps by the thinnest of
criteria can even consider itself a playoff contender.
「We're happy with how we're playing,」 Derek Jeter said. 「But we've got to
continue this for a while.」
Chien-Ming Wang's seven brilliant innings coupled with a Bobby Abreu home run
helped make it seven straight victories and 10 of 12 overall for the Yankees.
If they are looking for an encore, the Yanks (31-31) can win tonight and move
above .500 for the first time since April 20. Still, the Yankees trail Boston
by 91/2 games in the AL East.
Torre said the next step is getting five games above .500 and continuing to
progress from there.
「That's what is going to decide what we're doing in October - it's going to
be all about record,」 Torre said. 「We can't be concerned about catching the
Red Sox at this point in time because that means we're going to get
distracted.」
Wang (6-4) had his second straight dominant start, limiting the Diamondbacks
to one run on six hits over seven innings before Kyle Farnsworth and Mariano
Rivera sealed it. Rivera worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save in 10
opportunities.
It wasn't the Yankees' best offensive game of this streak - they only had
five hits - but after a 58-minute rain delay before the first pitch, they
played at a crisp pace, with Wang setting the tone.
Like many of the Yankees, Wang is having a torrid June. The right-hander
improved to 3-0 this month with a 2.08 ERA. Even if afterward Wang called his
latest performance 「OK」 and 「so-so.」 The Yankees will gladly take such
mediocrity.
Defense sure helped Wang. Jeter's lunging grab on Chris Young's line drive
for the final out of the seventh probably saved a run, and Miguel Cairo made
a highlight reel catch on Stephen Drew's line drive in the third.
Abreu's sizzling June continued with a three-run home run in the first inning
against Brandon Webb (6-4) that staked Wang to a 3-0 lead. The homer extended
Abreu's hitting streak to 11 games. He is hitting .488 in June.
「When Wang is pitching and you score runs early ... you know you've got such
a good guy on the mound that he's going to keep the game close every time,」
Abreu said.
The Diamondbacks got a run in the fourth on Chad Tracy's home run. It was the
first homer surrendered by Wang in seven starts, a stretch of 46 innings -
since Ben Broussard's blast on May 5 ended the right-hander's perfect-game
aspirations against the Mariners.
The Yankees' lead reached 4-1 in the seventh when Hideki Matsui raced home
from third as Robinson Cano got doubled up on a Melky Cabrera grounder. Cano
had rounded second base too wide and got nailed after Orlando Hudson made a
diving stop on the Cabrera grounder and threw him out.
So now the Yankees have their longest winning streak since winning 10
straight in May 2005.
「This is happening because [players] are working hard and are not going to
be denied,」 Torre said. 「It's a great attitude to have.」
