  After splitting the first two games with their crosstown rivals, the Yankees
will turn to Chien-Ming Wang in the Subway Series finale at 8:05 p.m. ET on
Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

  Wang has been as consistent as they come over his past six starts, compiling
21 strikeouts en route to a 5-1 record, but this third and final game between
the Yankees and Mets also showcases two of the premier shortstops in the
Major Leagues.

  Derek Jeter and Jose Reyes, albeit just trying to help their teams win, have
been strutting their stuff. In actuality, they never really stop showing what
they can do, and the first two games of the Subway Series were no exception.

  Jeter batted 6-for-9 with two doubles, a homer, two runs scored, three RBIs
and a stolen base in the series' first two games, while Reyes went 4-for-6
with three runs scored, a home run, four RBIs and five stolen bases.

  But even though the two share All-Star ability, Jeter said they differ
greatly as players.
  "We're completely different," he said. "He's a switch-hitter; he's running a
lot."

  One reporter asked the Yankees captain if the two of them add excitement to
the Subway Series -- a sort of showdown between shortstops.

  "I never look at it that way, because I'm not facing him, and he's not facing
me," Jeter said. "That comparison is always going to be there."

  It's a comparison that doesn't catch third baseman Alex Rodriguez off guard.

  "I'm not surprised," A-Rod said. "Derek is a fantastic player, and Reyes is
an upcoming superstar or a superstar already. He's a phenomenal player, too.
It's just great to see great talent."

  Despite downplaying the Yankees-Mets talent displayed at shortstop, Jeter
didn't deny how pumped up the city gets during the Subway Series.

  "The fans get into it when we're playing New York," he said. "You here about
it everywhere you go."



Pitching matchup

NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (6-4, 3.49 ERA)
Wang threw seven innings and gave up six hits and one run in his first career
start against the Diamondbacks in his last start. The 27-year-old
right-hander hasn't surrendered a home run to a right-handed batter since
last September.

NYM: RHP Orlando Hernandez (3-2, 2.38 ERA)
Hernandez had control problems in his last start, against the Dodgers,
finding a little too much of the strike zone with his pitches. He was touched
for four runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking three.

Player to watch

No hitter on the Mets roster has faced Wang. The right-hander will have to
pitch against the hot-hitting Reyes, however, and deal with the speedy
shortstop's pesky approach at the plate.
