Yankees' Wang becoming complete pitcher

NEW YORK - The one weakness of Chien-Ming Wang - and it is far more of a
minor fault than a major failing - is that he doesn't strike out enough
hitters.
他唯一弱點三振太少
Wang won 19 games for the Yankees last season despite averaging 3.14
strikeouts per nine innings. Of the 70 starters in baseball who reached 180
innings, Wang had the fewest strikeouts.
去年三振情況 以及19勝的老梗
"With him it doesn't matter so much, because he doesn't walk many batters and
he gets so many ground balls," said reliever Mike Myers, one of Wang's
closest friends on the team. "But he needed something else he could go to."
myers說:三振少沒關係 他很少保送 而且滾地球多
That learning process, delayed when Wang strained his right hamstring in
spring training, was on display last night. The sinker specialist struck out
a career-high 10 as the Yankees beat the Mets 8-2 at Yankee Stadium.

One of the most satisfying days of his career started out oddly for Wang when
he woke up in his New Jersey apartment with a sore neck. He reported to
Yankee Stadium at 1 p.m. for a game that started seven hours later.

"I did it sleeping," said Wang, who received ultrasound and heat treatments.
"It was tight during the game."

No matter, Wang threw 113 pitches and came within an out of his second
complete game. He allowed two runs on only six hits.
失分情況
"What's scary is the guy won 19 games last season without really knowing how
to pitch," said Myers, who got the last out. "He threw one sinker after
another. Now's he's pitching."

Wang didn't learn his sinker until he signed with the Yankees. His out pitch
as a collegian in Taiwan was a slider. The Yankees made him give the pitch up
when he developed shoulder trouble in 2001.

Pitching coach Ron Guidry gave Wang the pitch back last summer. The changeup
was added this spring. Now Wang has the ability to change the eye level of
the hitter by throwing a slider that starts high and drops. The changeup,
when he throws it properly, looks like a 95-mph fastball coming out of his
hands but crosses the plate at 85.

That's how the strikeouts piled up last night. The best example came in the
eighth inning. Wang fell behind 2-0 against Jose Reyes. He threw a slider
that Reyes looked at, then a changeup that fooled the Mets shortstop so badly
that he nearly fell over after swinging at it. Wang then followed with a
97-mph sinker out of the strike zone before getting Reyes to swing and miss
at a 96-mph sinker.
今天三振真多 球速快 真威阿
"Wang's an incredible talent. He's a special pitcher for us," said Alex
Rodriguez, who drove in three more runs. "What he did to Reyes, you don't see
that every day."

The Mets swung and missed 16 times, an extraordinarily high amount for any
pitcher.
"That last sinker he threw Reyes dove a lot," manager Joe Torre said. "He had
a good look at it, he swung and it wasn't there."

Wang was 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in his first four starts. He is 6-1 with a 2.26
ERA in seven starts since, returning to the form that placed him second in
the Cy Young Award voting last season.
季初狀況不好 現在很正
"Every time I feel better," he said. "I can throw all my pitches now."
Wang also has helped fix a worn-out bullpen by averaging 7 1/3 innings in
those seven starts. On a night when Scott Proctor needed a break and Torre
didn't want to use Mariano Rivera, Wang set the bullpen up for the nine-road
trip that starts tomorrow in Colorado.
王讓牛棚很舒服
Wang's next start will come on Saturday at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
According to the Taiwanese reporters covering the Yankees, Wang's appearance
will be a major event in that city's large Asian community. The stands could
be awash in the red-and-blue flag of Taiwan.

Wang was asked whether he would risk throwing Barry Bonds a changeup or stick
with his sinker.
Bonds對決準備
"Keep the ball down," he said. "Maybe a changeup then a sinker."
