Wang's manicure: Chien-Ming Wang came out after allowing just five hits over
6 1/3 innings and 88 pitches. The cracked nail on his right middle finger
again "was starting to get ugly," in the words of Torre. Wang said it was
"just sore." He files the nail between innings and says he soaks it in an
alcohol-type solution afterward. "It's always going to be a problem because
of how much pressure he puts on his fingers to throw his sinker," pitching
coach Ron Guidry said after Wang didn't allow a run for the second straight
start. "It's never going to heal as long as he's throwing sinkers. But you
can't ask him not to throw it because that's his best pitch. He doesn't stop
because it's bad. ... He's pretty tough mentally. Everybody has seen how
he's changed here in about a year and a half. He knows what he means to this
club."
