DETROIT, Aug. 25 — Before he shut off his cellphone Saturday morning,
Joe Torre took one last call as he wearily returned to the Yankees’ suburban
hotel around 4:30 a.m. It was Brian Cashman, the general manager, asking Torre
 if he wanted a fresh pitcher for Saturday.

Torre, the manager, told him that would not be necessary. He already had one
well-rested pitcher, presumably fast asleep in the hotel. It turned out that

The Yankees recovered from an exhausting defeat to push aside the Detroit
Tigers, 7-2, on Saturday night behind eight strong innings from Chien-Ming Wang
As his teammates slogged through a loss that ended at 3:30 a.m. after a
241-minute rain delay, Wang was resting back at the hotel. He left Comerica
Park, at Torre’s urging, around midnight.

洋基從昨天失敗中的勞累中取得今天的勝利。王建民的八局強有力的先發是勝利的功臣。
當小王的隊友在因雨延賽了241分鐘並且成天凌晨三點半才結束的比賽中白忙一場而敗戰

Wang allowed five hits, two walks and an earned run in eight innings, striking
out six to improve his record to 15-6. Brian Bruney worked the ninth to close
out the victory, which kept the Yankees’ deficit at six and a half games
behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. The Yankees trailed
Seattle by two and a half for the wild-card lead, pending the result of the
Mariners’ game in Texas.

The Tigers’ starter, Jeremy Bonderman, closed out the Yankees in the division
 series last October. This season, they seem to have figured him out.
Bonderman lost to the Yankees for the second time in a week. He started the
season 10-1 and is now 10-7.

Last Sunday, Bonderman walked five in six innings in a 9-3 loss at Yankee
Stadium. On Saturday, he walked four with no strikeouts in five and two-thirds
 innings, allowing seven runs..

Hideki Matsui doubled in the first two runs in the first inning after
Bobby Abreu singled and Alex Rodriguez walked with two out. Johnny Damon —
a .438 career hitter against Bonderman — lifted his eighth home run to
right-center field to open the third

The Yankees led by 3-2 through five innings, but they knocked out Bonderman
with a four-run flurry in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Melky
Cabrera tripled to the right-field corner to clear the bases. Damon followed
with a triple to center that made the score 7-2.

Rain delayed the start of Friday’s game for 4 hours 1 minute, and the teams
then played a 4:24 marathon. The Elias Sports Bureau said it had no data on
what time games ended, but few players could remember playing at a later hour.

The players stalked around their clubhouses before the first pitch at
11:06 p.m., working out, playing cards and staving off boredom to stay awake.

“I had like two cups of coffee,” Tigers first baseman Sean Casey said.
 “I don’t even drink coffee.”

The decision to play was made by the umpires because this was the Yankees’
only trip here this season. During the delay, the umpires told Torre that
every effort would be made to play after a directive from Major League Baseball,
 which reportedly was upset that Thursday’s game between the Chicago White Sox
and the Red Sox was called too soon.

“Evidently, the umpires got a call saying, ‘You’re going to play at any
cost,’ ” Torre said. “That’s the edict, and that’s what we did.”

On Saturday, only one Yankee showed up before the first bus arrived around 4:30
 p.m. — reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who got here at 2 for his usual early
workout. Torre held a brief meeting with the players, who were spared formal

Wang was well-rested, and he needed to be. He was coming off a shaky
three-start stretch in which he allowed 16 earned runs and 26 hits in 14 2/3
innings. He won his last start but struggled to hold runners on.

小王有了他需要的充份休息。因為他正從三次比較差的先發低潮中走出來。他在這三次的
先發中投了14又2/3局但有16分的責失和26支安打。他上次先發雖然勝了但是對於跑者的
掌握還是很抖。

That troubled him again Saturday, but not enough to lose the game.
Pla'cido Polanco walked, stole second and scored on a single in the first
inning. In the fifth, Brandon Inge singled, stole second and came around on a
passed ball and a wild pitch.

雖然今天對跑者的掌握還是不好，但是不足以輸掉這場比賽。Polanco被保送後盜上兩壘
並跑回一分。第五局Inge安打後盜兩壘並因為小王的暴投跑回第二分。

That run was unearned, snapping Wang’s streak of 47 starts without allowing
an unearned run. According to Elias, it was the longest streak by a Yankee
since the A.L. started counting unearned runs in 1913.

Inge那一分是非自責分，並且把小王連47場無非自責分的紀錄中斷。這是自1913年開始計
算非自責失分以來最長的局數。
