ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 26 — They started the journey seven months ago,
across the bay in spring training in Tampa. Joba Chamberlain was not invited,
Roger Clemens was not signed, Melky Cabrera was not a starter and Carl Pavano
was not hurt.

So much has changed, the season unfolding in surprising and sometimes painful
ways. The Yankees lost 29 of their first 50 games, and did not really find
their way until July.

The Yankees trail the Boston Red Sox in the American League East by three games
with four to play, meaning the Yankees will enter the playoffs almost surely as
the wild-card team. They have not taken that route since 1997, but history shows
that wild-card winners have little, if any, disadvantage.

剩下四場比賽的洋基，在美聯距離SOX還有三場勝差要追，這幾乎篤定洋基會以外卡的名次

Six of the past 10 teams to reach the World Series were wild-card winners,
including the 2006 Detroit Tigers, who eliminated the Yankees in a four-game
division series last fall. This season, the Yankees are on track to play a
different Central Division team, the Cleveland Indians, in the first round.

Steinbrenner made it to Yankee Stadium for just one game this season, and he

Derek Jeter started the Yankees’ barrage against J. P. Howell with a home run
 to the left-field seats to lead off the fourth inning. An error, a walk and
two groundouts made it 2-1, and in the fifth Jeter drove in the next run with
a sacrifice fly.

Jeter clapped his hands — once, vigorously, the way he does at big moments —
 after Doug Mientkiewicz crossed the plate. The Yankees were leading by two
runs and rolling.

A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases. A single by Jorge Posada drove in two
. Up stepped Robinson Cano', one of several left-handed hitters whose sluggish
 start had seemed to doom the Yankees. He blasted a three-run homer to right
and finished with five runs batted in.

The outburst gave Chien-Ming Wang plenty of support in his final start. Wang
was 19-6 with a 3.63 earned run average in 2006, and he finishes this season
with almost identical numbers: 19-7 with a 3.70 E.R.A., in three fewer starts.

After Wang retired the side in the sixth inning — finishing, naturally, with
two harmless groundouts — Chamberlain began to warm up in the bullpen. He has
 been the revelation of the Yankees’ season, a future starter, the team
insists, who has overpowered hitters in 17 relief outings.

在六局被敲了兩支無關痛傷的安打後小王下場休息。張伯倫在牛棚開始熱身。被視為是洋

None of those have come on consecutive days, but that is about to change.
Manager Joe Torre has been authorized to use Chamberlain in back-to-back games,
 in anticipation of doing so in October.

Chamberlain allowed a hit in the seventh, but no runs. Earlier in the inning,
Cabrera corralled a long drive by Carlos Pen~a while crashing into the padded
center-field fence. Cabrera has been struggling for hits, but his exceptional
range and arm in center were crucial in turning the season around.

So was the comeback by Cano' and the sensational season of Alex Rodriguez, as
well as the steady play of Jeter, who has been nursing a sore right knee. Torre
wants to rest all three down the stretch, and he can do that now. Clinching
with four games to go had once seemed impossible.

"I thought it would come down to the last day,” Rodriguez said before the game
. “I didn’t think we would have a cushion.”

The Yankees waited until the weekend after the All-Star Game to rise above .500
for good. They did that here on July 14, in another victory by Wang.

 Wang’s next start will probably be in Game 1 of a division series. That is
just what the Yankees expected, seven long months ago.
