The global financial crisis is hammering fortunes all over Asia, but the past year was still a good one for philanthropy as tycoons and more modest donors tried to maintain their charity commitments. Many opened up their checkbooks to help the victims of the Sichuan earthquake and the Myanmar cyclone in May. Many more donated to health, education, cultural and other causes. This is the our third annual Heroes of Philanthropy issue, and the second in which we've compiled a list of 48 leading givers-- 4 from each of 12 countries. These aren't always the biggest givers. Instead we aim to highlight a varied group of generous people, some holdovers from last year but mostly new names who deserve recognition. Some are very big givers--Li Ka-shing's vast contributions earn him a place on the list once again. Others don't show up on any of our Rich Lists but have put together useful projects. Kagemasa Kozuki of Japan, a former jukebox repairman who founded videogame maker Konami, gives money to athletes so they can continue training; 31 of them competed in Beijing. By calling attention to these 48 (and 2 notable American altruists), we hope to encourage more giving, even in a down economy. http://www.forbes.com/global/2009/0316/043_philanthropy.html Chien-Ming Wang Country: Taiwan Age: 28 New York Yankees pitcher.
