CC Sabathia knows what Chien-Ming Wang is going through, which is why the
big lefthander has done his best to keep his conversations with his
struggling teammate away from the topic of Wang's dreadful start.
Last year, Sabathia endured a similar skid to begin the season, going
0-3 with a 13.50 ERA in his first three starts.
"I'm sure he's already thinking about it more than anybody else in here
right now," said Sabathia, who allowed six earned runs and lost a pair
of leads in 6-2/3innings en route to a no-decision Wednesday. "You don't
want him thinking about it all the time, so you don't want that to be the
topic every time you talk to him. If he wants to talk, I'm here."
Wang is 0-3 with a 34.50 ERA in three starts, giving up 23 runs on 23 hits
and six walks in only six innings. He left the Yankees Wednesday to head
to Tampa, where he will throw 100 pitches in an extended spring training
game today.
Wang is scheduled to rejoin the Yankees in Boston tomorrow, and while
Joe Girardi has said it's possible the pitcher could rejoin the rotation
as early as Tuesday in Detroit, it's also possible that Wang could wind up
on the disabled list.
