Yankees' Wang worried over shoulder pain
By Peter Abraham ‧ pabraham@lohud.com ‧ July 24, 2009
NEW YORK — Chien-Ming Wang was examined by Mets team physician
Dr. David Altchek on Wednesday to get a second opinion on his injured
right shoulder. Wang did not come away reassured.
"I'm worried," he said last night.
Wang has not pitched since July 4. After two weeks of rest, he played catch
on Monday and felt pain in the front of his shoulder. It was then that
agent Alan Nero suggested another doctor check out his client.
Altchek is the same doctor who performed shoulder surgery on catcher
Jorge Posada a year ago.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he would welcome all opinions.
The team also plans to confer with Dr. James Andrews before revealing
Wang's status.
"In this environment second opinions are almost routine now, which is a
good thing," Cashman said.
Cashman wanted to speak to Yankees team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad before
revealing what Altchek told the Yankees.
Wang (1-6, 9.64) has been on the disabled list three times in the last 13
months. He tore a ligament and a tendon in his right foot running the bases
last June and missed the rest of the season. After a poor start, the Yankees
placed Wang on the disabled list with that they said was a hip injury.

Season slipping away from Wang
By Peter Abraham ‧ pabraham@lohud.com ‧ July 25, 2009
NEW YORK - Chien-Ming Wang has tentative plans to visit orthopedic surgeon
Dr. James Andrews next week and fears that his season has come to an end.
Wang left his start on July 4 because of pain in his right shoulder. There
has been no improvement since, and on Tuesday Wang had a second MRI
administered by Mets team physician Dr. David Altchek.
The results of that test were sent to Andrews yesterday for review. Andrews
performed shoulder surgery on Wang in 2001, and If Wang needs surgery again,
he would likely return to Andrews.
"I'm just waiting," Wang said. "I'm worried."
It has been a trying 13 months for the 29-year-old right-hander. He
suffered a torn tendon and ligament in his right foot while running the
bases on June 15, 2008, against Houston. That ended his season. Wang has
been on the disabled list twice this year and is 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA.
"It has been a frustrating year with the foot injury and now my shoulder,
I started the season terrible. It has definitely been frustrating," Wang
said.
Wang is arbitration eligible for the 2010 season. If he needs major surgery,
the Yankees could choose to non-tender him in December.
"I don't really have a best-case scenario. I had thought the best-case
scenario had been that he would pitch by Sept. 1, but I'm not sure if
that's possible now with the little setback," Yankees manager Joe Girardi
said.
At this point, Girardi is not expecting Wang to return.
"I think you kind of have to look at it that way. Anyone suffers an injury,
I don't think you can say you'll count on him on this day," he said.
"Setbacks take place, so you don't know when you're going to get him back,
You have to count on the guys that are on the roster at that time. We'd
love to have him back as soon as possible, but it's not something I can
tell you is going to happen."
