Yanks Rally to Win Game, but May Lose Wang
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: July 4, 2009
Chien-Ming Wang was making progress, again. He was beating Roy Halladay in
the sixth inning, and with another out, he could call Saturday’s game his
longest outing of a difficult season. But his shoulder would not let him.
Wang allowed a home run, then threw a ball that was startlingly slower than
it should have been. He left Yankee Stadium for a hospital, slipped into a
magnetic resonance imaging tube and returned before the game ended. He
watched from the clubhouse as Jorge Posada singled home the winning run in
the 12th inning of the Yankees’ 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees have won 9 of 10 and moved to a game behind Boston for first
place in the American League East. Posada ducked a decoy pie in the face from
Joba Chamberlain after the game, only to be slammed by A. J. Burnett. Yet the
loss of a starter, even one like Wang who has struggled to find his inner
ace, tempered the fun.
The Yankees said Wang had a shoulder strain and bursitis, and Manager Joe
Girardi acknowledged he would need rest. That almost certainly means another
trip to the disabled list for Wang, who missed most of last season with a
foot injury, the effects of which bled into this season.
“I’m confident he’ll be back,” Girardi said. “I just can’t tell you
exactly when. And it’s been a trying year for him already, what he’s went
through. I thought today was probably his best start, and now we have to deal
with this.”
Wang faced Adam Lind with one on and one out in the sixth. He had gotten
Lind, who batted .360 last month, to ground into a double play in the first
inning and struck him out in the fourth. This time, Lind ripped Wang’s 65th
pitch to right for a two-run homer.
The Yankees trailed, 4-3, but that was not what alarmed Girardi. The pitch
was 90 miles per hour, Girardi said, a tick or two slower than normal. When
Wang’s first pitch to Scott Rolen came in at 86, Girardi said he assumed it
was a slider. Then Posada motioned for Girardi and a trainer to come to the
mound.
The pitch was actually a sinker, Girardi was told, and Wang does not throw 86
m.p.h. sinkers. Trouble.
Wang said he felt tightness on the home run pitch, and the pain intensified
on the next pitch. Even so, Wang said he was not worried.
“The doctor explained to me I just strained the muscle,” Wang said.
Wang can distinguish levels of shoulder pain. As a minor leaguer, he had
arthroscopic surgery that cost him the 2001 season. In 2005, as a rookie with
the Yankees, Wang was found to have shoulder inflammation in July and missed
52 games.
“In ’05, when I stretched my arm behind, it hurt,” Wang said through an
interpreter. “This time, it’s different.”
Even so, the Yankees at minimum must find a replacement for Wang on Thursday,
and Girardi said they could not comfortably dip into their bullpen for
Alfredo Aceves or Phil Hughes. Both have excelled in relief but have been in
the bullpen so long that they cannot throw many pitches Thursday.
Girardi said Aceves could throw no more than 60 and Hughes no more than 50.
That would probably rule out either for a start, making Sergio Mitre a
leading candidate.
Mitre, 28, has 52 career starts in the majors, including seven for Girardi
with the Florida Marlins in 2006. He is 2-1 with a 3.26 earned run average in
five starts for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and General Manager Brian
Cashman was so intrigued that he planned to see him pitch last week before
meeting with the major league team in Atlanta instead.
The Yankees’ problems then seem long gone. They are 47-33, the furthest they
have been over .500 this season, and are surviving a slump by Robinson Cano,
who is hitless in his last 20 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Cano came up against Shawn Camp in the 12th, after Mark Teixeira led off with
a double off the first base bag and Alex Rodriguez was walked intentionally.
With a 3-0 count, Cano dropped a bunt that catcher Raul Chavez threw to third
to force Teixeira. Girardi said that Cano, who has no sacrifice bunts this
season, misunderstood the sign.
Up next was Posada, who had guided six relievers through six and two-thirds
strong innings and homered off Halladay in the fourth. He took a 1-1 changeup
from Camp and lashed it to right center, too far for Vernon Wells to make a
throw to the plate.
Rodriguez scored, the celebration began and Wang watched it on television.
His team is rolling, but he is a spectator again.
INSIDE PITCH
Catcher Jose Molina was at the Stadium on Saturday, with plans to play for in
the minors on Sunday and to rejoin the Yankees in Minnesota on Tuesday.
Molina has missed almost two months with a strained quadriceps. ... Jesus
Montero, 19, has taken quickly to his recent promotion. Montero, a catcher,
hit .346 with five home runs in his first 22 games for Class AA Trenton.
