Wang in La-la Land?
Friday, November 20, 2009, 11:29 AM EST [General]
Chien-Ming Wang to the Dodgers? It could happen. Since Wang was non-tendered
and the Yankees may not even offer him an incentive laden deal, the erstwhile
Bombers ace will likely have to seek employment elsewhere. While Wang told
Taiwanese reporters that his first choice was to remain in New York, he’s
also not opposed to heading out west and reunite with Joe Torre.
“Not bad,” Wang said about going to L.A. The two-time 19-game winner hopes
to throw in a rehab game by April or May. Assuming he’s given a green light,
a healthy Wang could provide Torre's rotation a boost as a backend starter.
He has supporters in Dodgertown, including third-base coach Larry Bowa and
reliever Hong-Chih Kuo, which whom Wang went to middle school and remain
friends to this day.
Wang, who turns 30 years old in March, had surgery to repair a torn ligament
in his shoulder capsule in July, the latest in a terrible run of luck that
started when he tore his Lisfranc ligament rounding third base during a game
in Houston on June 15, 2008. On April 18 of this past season, his record
stood at 0-3 with a 34.50 ERA.
Wang’s agent, Alan Nero, told Joel Sherman that Wang can begin a throwing
program on December 1. The report added that the Yankee will closely study
their physicians’ evaluations and balance those reports with exactly how
much he has left. Wang’s lost a few digits on his velocity and has failed to
evolve by refining his slider and change-up. The biggest key to Wang’s prior
success was the bite he had on his sinker. He had nothing on it in '09 and
you saw what happened.
The Yankees need depth for the backend of their rotation, but are also in a
good spot as defending champions and a collection of young arms waiting in
the wings if they don’t trade for Roy Halladay and John Lackey. Phil Hughes
and Joba Chamberlain cannot be dismissed as future starters.
Even if one or the other is dealt or works out of the bullpen, do not forget
about Ian Kennedy. The right-hander made a heartwarming return to the Majors
from an aneurysm under his right armpit on September 23 in Anaheim by
escaping an eighth-inning jam and setting up the Yankees taking two of three
from the Angels. Kennedy led the Surprise Rafters of the Arizona Fall League
with 29 2/3 innings pitched, a 4.25 ERA, five walks and 28 strikeouts – and
in his final start allowed a run in five innings with no walks and five Ks.
Almost as important as his ongoing return to full strength is that I get the
feeling he’s finally matured to where he knows what it takes to fit in –
and eventually – succeed as a big leaguer. This story bears watching come
Spring Training.
