CHEER LEAGUE
STADIUM SOUNDS GOOD TO A-ROD, YANKS IN WIN
By MICHAEL MORRISSEY
June 24, 2006 --
With Derek Jeter on second and two out in the second inning, Alex Rodriguez
ripped a liner to left field. Jeter's quick legs and heady baserunning could
only get him to third, though, and so Rodriguez was asked if he pounded the
baseball too hard.
"With the way the hits have been coming this year, I'm not complaining about
any hits," Rodriguez said with a laugh after going 3-for-5 with the game
-winning RBI in last night's 6-5 victory over Florida.
Rodriguez told the Post's George King that he was ready for boos as the
Yankees (41-30) began a nine-game homestand. He certainly received them in
droves when he walked back to the dugout after a called strikeout in the first
against Florida righty Brian Moehler.
But A-Rod belted the tie-breaking RBI single to center in the fourth to plate
Johnny Damon during a three-run inning, and a lively crowd of 54,025 roared
in delight during a standing ovation.
"It felt great," Rodriguez said of the applause, which has been measured out
in teaspoons this year for him. "We've always said, they don't hold grudges.
"They want you to do well. They boo you because I think they love you.
It's a little bit of a tough love. You've just got to do the job, and they
will cheer you."
Like Rodriguez - on an 11-for-28 tear - Chien-Ming Wang (8-3) bounced back
after recent struggles. Wang served up a game-ending two-run homer in the
ninth to Ryan Zimmerman in Washington on Sun day, but he showed no physi cal
or emo tional ef fects from that deep start and disappointing finish.
"It gets to the point - you don't like to do this - but you count on him,"
manager Joe Torre said. "You never like to put that on any kid with the
limited experience he has, but the way he's pitched, you just feel that way."
The Bombers took a 3-0, first-inning lead, benefiting from three Florida
errors and Jorge Posada's two-run single that deflected off first baseman
Mike Jacobs' glove near the first-base line.
They gained another three-run advantage in the fourth after Wang coughed up
the lead in the second by becoming too reliant on his change-up and slider
instead of his hard sinker. Still, the sophomore righty went seven innings to
protect the bullpen and felt he could have gone another. He was throwing
97 mph in his final frame and only threw 85 pitches.
"He really wasn't at the end of his rope," Torre conceded. "In fact, (Ron)
Guidry went over when we were taking him out.
"He said, 'Last time you threw 104. You've got 85.' And (Wang) said, 'Well,
that means I have 15 more.'
"Nope. Sorry. He doesn't want to come out."
Both Guidry and the Yankee grounds crew visited the mound during the eighth
inning in an effort to help Kyle Farnsworth through the rain and through the
frame.
If George Steinbrenner had been in town, perhaps he would've strode to the
hill in aviator sunglasses and blue blazer, too.
With the Yankees holding fast to a 6-4 lead against the upstart Florida team
managed by former Yankee Joe Girardi, Farnsworth struggled once again.
He allowed three hits and a run before getting the second out of the inning,
but he whiffed Cody Ross and induced a flyout to Jeremy Hermida to bridge the
game to Mariano Rivera.
"The rain had nothing to do with it. I pitched like (garbage), so I had to get
myself out of it," Farnsworth said.
Rivera was terrific, breaking bats during a 1-2-3 ninth. He needed only 12
pitches for his 15th save.
