SEATTLE — You can usually tell the Yankee fans at opposing ballparks by their
blue caps and team jerseys. But at Safeco Field last night, they were
distinguishable by the red-and-blue Taiwanese flags they were waving.
There were fans of Chien-Ming Wang sprinkled throughout the crowd of 41,380,
and he did not disappoint them, throwing seven strong innings as the Yankees
beat the Seattle Mariners 9-2.
The Yankees have won six of their last seven games. They will try to take the
series tonight with Randy Johnson (14-9) facing Jarrod Washburn (6-12).
The Yankees had 14 hits and drew eight walks.
There were at least 10 Taiwanese flags held by fans or tied to railings in
the upper deck. Most were in right field, where one group of fans danced and
banged a drum whenever Wang recorded an out. One large red-and-yellow sign
said "Wang" in both English letters and Chinese characters.
"That made me feel good," Wang said. "More people (are) coming to games now.
I saw them up there. I was surprised."
Wang (15-5) leads the Yankees in victories and innings. His next start will
be Tuesday when the team returns home to face the Detroit Tigers in a
possible playoff preview.
Wang was 1-1 with a 6.61 ERA in his three previous starts. Some took it as a
sign that the 26-year-old right-hander was wearing down because of the amount
of innings he has worked. Wang insisted he felt fine and the proof came last
night.
"He was back to his old self," manager Joe Torre said. "He was getting a lot
of ground balls and a lot of bad swings."
Wang carried a shutout — and a 95-mph fastball — into the seventh inning
when poor defense and a bad call cost him.
With one out, Richie Sexson hit a sharp grounder to third that Nick Green
backhanded. But Green, starting for an ill Alex Rodriguez, threw too quickly
and the ball hopped past first baseman Craig Wilson and out of play,
putting Sexson at second base.
"He rushed the throw and he didn't need to," Torre said
Wang got Raul Ibanez to ground out as Sexson moved to third. Jose Lopez
then hit a slow grounder over the mound. Cano charged the ball and made a
strong throw.
Replays showed Lopez was out but umpire Jeff Nelson called him safe and a run
scored. Singles by Ben Broussard and Yuniesky Betancourt gave Seattle another
run.
Wang allowed two runs on seven hits. He struck out five without a walk and
lowered his ERA to 3.81. He is 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA against the Mariners.
"My sinker was better this time," said Wang, who had been leaving his
signature pitch up in the strike zone in recent starts. "I was working on
it. My shoulder has to stay up."
Seattle starter Felix Hernandez held the Yankees to two runs over eight
innings at Safeco last Aug. 31. The Yankees won the game 2-0 on solo homers
by Cano and Gary Sheffield.
Last night was a far different result as Hernandez (10-12) was out of the
game in the fourth inning. He gave up seven runs on nine hits and four walks.
Bobby Abreu had a two-out single in the first inning and moved up when
Hernandez walked Jason Giambi and Jorge Posada on 13 pitches.
Cano, back in the lineup after getting some rest on Tuesday, delivered a
two-run single to center.
"That first inning was the key," Torre said. "We made him work."
Hernandez got through the second and third innings with ease then fell
apart in the fourth.
Cano walked before singles by Melky Cabrera and Green loaded the bases.
Johnny Damon drove in two runs with a single to right.
Giambi had a two-run single later in the inning before Posada drove
Hernandez off the mound with an RBI single.
Posada and Cano drove in runs in the eighth inning.
