Yankees drop heartbreaker in extras
Stanton allows 10th-inning walk-off long ball to Roberts

BALTIMORE -- The Yankees were very close to their third consecutive win
on Tuesday night, but Brian Roberts wasn't ready to let his Orioles lose
for a seventh straight game.
Roberts drilled a walk-off home run against Mike Stanton on the first
pitch of the 10th inning, leading Baltimore to a 5-4 win over New York
at Camden Yards.
The loss moved the Yankees four games behind the O's for second place
in the American League East. The two teams play the rubber match of their
three-game set on Wednesday.
New York struck immediately against Sidney Ponson, as Derek Jeter and
Robinson Cano each singled to start the game. Alex Rodriguez brought
Jeter home with a sacrifice fly, while Cano scored on an RBI double by
Hideki Matsui, giving the Yanks a 2-0 lead.
Larry Bigbie, who homered in Monday night's game, repeated the feat on
Tuesday, belting a 2-1 pitch from starter Chien-Ming Wang over the right-
field wall to slice the lead in half.
The Bombers added to the lead in the third on Cano's sixth homer of the
year, a solo shot off Ponson. New York made it 4-1 in the sixth on a solo
shot by Matsui, his 10th.
But the O's fought back with another long ball of their own in the bottom
of the sixth, as Rafael Palmeiro drilled a two-run shot to center, cutting
the lead back to one.
The homer was No. 563 of Palmeiro's career, tying him with Reggie Jackson
for ninth on the all-time list. It was also his 2,990th hit, leaving him
just 10 shy of the 3,000 club.
Wang tossed up a zero in the seventh, handing over a one-run lead to Tom
Gordon, but the right-hander couldn't hold it. Gordon walked Roberts to
start the frame, then committed a throwing error when Bigbie laid down a
sacrifice bunt, putting runners at first and third.
Miguel Tejada didn't wait long to tie it up, lining the first pitch up
the middle, scoring Roberts. With runners at first and second and nobody
out, Gordon beared down, striking out Palmeiro and Jay Gibbons for the
first two outs.
Sammy Sosa then hit a ball in the hole at short, where Jeter fielded it
and made an off-balance throw to third. Rodriguez made a great play to
catch it, keeping his foot on the bag to end the inning with the score tied.
B.J. Ryan threw a pair of 1-2-3 innings to improve to 1-1. Stanton's one
pitch was enough to earn him the loss, dropping him to 1-2.
