官網 http://0rz.net/b90tn Joe Torre has been looking for consistency in the starting rotation for the past few weeks. Leave it to rookie Chien-Ming Wang to provide it. Wang shut the Tigers out over seven innings on Sunday, leading the Bombers to a 1-0 win over Detroit. "Wang did a great job," said Derek Jeter. "We weren't able to score very many runs and he shut them out." New York took two of three at Comerica Park this weekend, its first series win against an American League team since May 24-26, when it swept Detroit at Yankee Stadium. The win also marked the first victory of the season for the Yankees when scoring three or less runs. That snapped a streak of 79 games without such a win, a franchise record. "This is a big game, considering we haven't been able to do this," said manager Joe Torre. "We haven't been able to win low-scoring games, so to have one run hold up was important." The Yankees cut a game off of Boston's lead in the AL East, as the Bombers return home trailing the Red Sox by five games in the division. New York finishes its road trip with a 3-2 record, as the Yanks return to the Bronx for six games against the Orioles and Indians before the All-Star break. "We won a couple of games in a row, but we have to build on it," Torre said. "The way we won these two games was important, because they're the type you need to play nine innings to win." Gary Sheffield provided the only run of the game with an RBI single against Tigers starter Nate Robertson in the fourth inning. Robertson took the loss despite pitching a complete game, allowing one run on nine hits. Wang put the first two batters of the game on base, giving up a single to Brandon Inge and hitting Placido Polanco -- one of three Tigers hitters drilled by Wang. But the young right-hander induced three fly balls, stranding both runners. The Tigers threatened again in the second, putting men on the corners with two outs, but Wang got Craig Monroe to ground out for the final out, again squashing a Detroit rally. "When he needed to get out of an inning, he made the pitch that got it done, " Torre said. "When young pitchers get in a jam, the game speeds up for them. He seemed to be under control." After the Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, Detroit had scoring opportunities in the fifth and sixth, but Wang held tough, getting Carlos Guillen to fly out with a man on third to end the fifth, then getting Chris Shelton to hit into a 1-4-3 double play to finish the sixth. "Mechanically, he was flying open; you saw a bunch of hit batters, so today was work for him," said catcher John Flaherty. "The great thing about Chien is that when he needs a double play, you feel like he's only one good sinker away." Wang limited the Tigers to five hits in seven frames, walking one and striking out two. It marked his third solid outing in his last four starts, improving him to 5-3 this season with a 3.98 ERA -- lowest among Yankees starters. "Now we're near halfway through the year and you could make an argument that when he goes out to the mound, we feel like we have our best chance to win," Flaherty said. "We've gotten a lot more from this guy than I think anybody thought." Tom Gordon tossed a scoreless eighth, setting up Mariano Rivera for his 18th save of the season. Rivera has now hurled 22 consecutive scoreless innings. "We feel good about it," said Rivera of the one-run victory. "It was important for us, to know that we're capable of doing that." "These are games we haven't been winning," echoed Flaherty. "Good teams win the one-run games and the low-scoring games, and we haven't been able to do that this year. Today, we finally did." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.139.140.65
