:     NEW YORK -- Before Thursday's game, Yankees manager Joe Torre predicted
: that sharpness would determine the success of Chien-Ming Wang's first start
: since July 8. But Torre was careful to note that if Wang wasn't sharp early,
: the pitcher was likely to adjust until he found success.

    在星期四的比賽之前，洋基教頭 Joe Torre 就預測控球的能力會決定 Wang
    能否成功的踏出自從　July.8　進入傷兵名單的復出首役。

    但 Torre 也謹慎的指出即使 Wang 一開場無法取得最好的狀況，仍有可能

:     Despite allowing two early runs and picking up the loss, Wang proved
: Torre sage by producing a solid outing, allowing the Devil Rays eight hits
: and three runs in five innings.

    所以儘管 Wang 在一開局就被得了兩分，最終還輸球， Wang 還是以一場不錯的
    投球內容印證了 Torre 的預言，在五局的投球內容內被 Devil Rays 敲了八支
    安打掉三分。

:     "I thought he did a good job," Torre said. "In the first inning, there
: were a couple of balls hit hard off him, but after that, even in the inning
: they scored, it was a broken-bat base hit that scored the run. I thought his
: command was pretty good for the first time."

    「我認為他表現的很好。」 Torre 如是說，「在首局，有些球的判決？ (結局)

:     Wang said he struggled with his location in the first inning, throwing
: too many balls over the middle of the plate. Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre
: said Wang's pitches also were high, and that the rookie's breaking ball
: wasn't as sharp as it had been before the injury.

     Wang 說他在第一局試著很努力的站穩先發投手的位置，然而卻投了太多紅中的
     失投球 (?)，投手教練 Mel Stottlemyre 也說 Wang 的球路有點偏高，而且以
     往的致勝球路似乎沒有受傷前那麼犀利。

:     The Devil Rays took advantage, opening the game with three straight hits,
: and four by the first five batters. Julio Lugo led off with a single, but he
: was caught attempting to steal second base by Jorge Posada. Carl Crawford and
: Jorge Cantu hit back-to-back doubles to put the first run on the board before
: Aubrey Huff grounded out to second. Jonny Gomes followed, and he drove in the
: second run with a single to left, but Travis Lee flew out to center to end
: the inning.

      Devil Rays 在一開場就搶得先機，以三支連續的安打揭開序幕，並且在前五位
      的打者就有四支安打的表現。Julio Lugo 該局首打席的安打，雖然他之後被
      Jorge Posada 盜壘刺，然而 Carl Crawford 和 Jorge Cantu 接連的兩支二壘
　　　打就搶下第一分，接著 Aubrey Huff 雖然二壘前滾地球出局，下一棒的 Jonny

:     Wang settled in after that, escaping trouble in the second and third by
: inducing ground ball outs. A two-base error by Hideki Matsui in the fourth
: left a runner on second with one out, but Wang used his two-seam fastball
: to record back-to-back strikeouts of Alex Gonzalez and Joey Gathright. Those
: were Wang's only strikeouts in the game.

      Wang 在之後就穩定了下來，以滾地球出局度過了二三局，在第四局因為 Hideki
      Matsui 一個兩個壘包的失誤陷入了一出局二壘有人的危機，然而此時 Wang 以
      其二縫線直球接連三振 Alex Gonzalez 和 Joey Gathright 化解危機。這也是
      Wang 全場僅有的兩個三振。

:     The Rays cobbled together a run in the fifth when Crawford singled,
: advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Gomes' broken-bat single.
: The Yankees were encouraged by Wang's performance during his final four
: innings.

      Rays 在第五局再下一城，靠的是 Crawford 的一壘安，並且靠著暴投上了二壘
      ，Gomes 的斷棒安打再將他護送回本壘。然而， Yankees 隊卻因 Wang 的表現
      在最後四局有起色。

:     "Overall, he threw well," Stottlemyre said. "We couldn't ask for too much
: more than what he did. We wanted him to go 80 pitches, and that's what he had
: through five. He felt good and wanted to continue, but we've still got to
: protect him a little bit."

:     Stottlemyre's cautious outlook is understandable considering the injury
: woes that have befallen Yankees starters this season. New York has sent 14
: starters to the mound, from proven stars like Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson
: to journeymen like Darrell May and Tim Redding.

      Stottlemyre 的謹慎看法是可以理解的，有鑒於今年 Yankees 先發投手接二
      連三的受傷狀況，總計 Yankees 本季總共使用了 14 個不同的先發投手，從
      有名的球星 Mike Mussina，Randy Johnson 到短期的僱用工 Darrell May 和
      Tim Redding 都是人選。

:     Wang's sudden case of right shoulder inflammation, which Torre said
: surprised him when it was announced in July, forced the Yankees to further
: scramble to assemble a five-man rotation. Al Leiter was signed to fill in
: shortly after his release by the Marlins, and he was soon followed by Aaron
: Small. But Wang's return and Leiter's recent struggles have bumped Leiter
: into the bullpen.

      在七月的當時，Wang 突然的右肩發炎，也是讓教練 Torre 非常震驚的。這件
      事也逼的 Yankees 的五先發投手輪值重新洗牌，在當時的被 Marlins 所釋出
      的Al Leiter 就在這個時候被選入以填補先發投手的缺口，下一個很快的例子
      是 Aaron Small。然而 Wang 的歸隊以及 Leiter 最近不佳的表現使得 Leiter
      本人被擠到了牛棚備戰。

:     The Yankees are counting on Wang to be a key contributor down the stretch,
: but they know that he'll have to ease into the role after enduring such a
: long layoff.

      Yankee 指望 Wang 能在之後有關鍵的貢獻，但他們也知道，在之前長期的休

:     "It's from start to start," Stottlemyre said. "I expect his command to
