Burke & Hare.
Irishmen William Burke and William Hare moved to
Scotland as laborers, and soon became procurers of
human cadaevers to meet the demand of Edinburgh's
medical schools. At first they robbed graves, but
then found the allure of murdering people much easier.
It was after they reportedly they killed victim #16 -
"Daft" Jamie, a mentally retarded young man ?that they
were caught. They were arrested along with Burke's
mistress and Hare's wife. Hare was offered immunity
from prosecution if he turned King's evidence, which
he did, and Burke was hung on January 28, 1829 in front
of a crowd of 25,000 onlookers. His mistress escaped
prosecution. Hare reportedly died a penniless pauper
in London in 1859. The doctor who bought the corpses,
Robert Knox, was never prosecuted. . Ironically, Burke's
body was donated to science after the execution, and to
this day, his skeleton resides in the University of
Edinburgh's Medical School Museum. In the olden days,
people who committed some crimes were also known as Burkers?and
resurrectionists?and the resulting panic about such
murders was called Burkophobia.
Burked.
(Slang) A term popularized by the sensational
Burke & Hare killings in the 19th century. Tony
Braun was 'burked' by Bonnie Ritten and Walt Braun.
While the word has several meanings, its use here is
to "execute by suffocation" in such a manner that the
body is left intact and suitable for dissection.

NITPICK:
When Grissom explained the brief history behind the
word burked, he said that the killers were foiled
when a medical student discovered his fiancee was
the last victim. Alas, Grissom has fallen prey to
an urban legend of sorts which most likely sprouts
from the movies, in particular, the 1959 movie The
Flesh and the Fiends (later renamed Mania) starring
the distinguished British actor Peter Cushing.
Cushing's character was modeled after the doctor
who accepted the corpses, and in this film, it was
only when he discovered his fiancee's corpse did
he truly realize where his supply of bodies was
coming from.

而且英文裡也因為這位「奇人」，而多了"burke"這個單字
（字典上的解釋是：「把某人勒死以出賣屍體」）
