Vaidisova has smashing time
By HAROLD GUTMANN
THE JOURNAL NEWS

NEW YORK - Rock beats scissors. Paper beats rock. And chair beats racket, at
least when Nicole Vaidisova is involved. After losing five match points in
her match against Flavia Pennetta, who forced a tiebreaker, the 18-year-old
from Prague smashed her racket against her chair. The chair stayed upright
while her frame bent all the way to a 90-degree angle.
"I had (five) match points and I didn't make one of them, so I think that
deserved it," said Vaidisova, the No. 13 seed.
Vaidisova said she has broken countless rackets, but not as many as a
notoriously emotional former Open champion: "I'm an angel compared to Marat
(Safin)."
Vaidisova said she was upset.
"I'm not going to lie," Vaidisova said. "I thought I would be in the locker
room at that time, but I got it out of me and was able to focus and play
again."

Vaidisova Breaks Into Third Round With Peer
By Richard Pagliaro
08/30/2007
[quote]
Sidelined since Wimbledon while battling a bout of glandular fever, Vaidisova
has not dropped a set in her first two matches and said she's pleased with
her level of play.
"I feel good. I haven't played since Wimbledon so it's a little tricky coming
back and playing here," Vaidisova said. "I had no expectations coming in. I
didn't know how I would play in the matches because I just started practicing
again three weeks ago. I'm just happy to be out here playing well. I think
the bigger challenge is mentally playing point by point and getting used to
the match environment again. I think I'm playing pretty well so I'm happy."
The victory vaults Vaidisova into a third-round meeting with 18th-seeded
Shahar Peer, who dismissed Bethanie Mattek 6-2, 6-1. The Vaidisova-Peer
rivalry dates back to the junior days and pits Vaidisova's attacking
power-based baseline game against Peer's persistence and defensive ability.
"Shahar and me we've known each other since we were 10 years old," Vaidisova
said. "She's a really good player who plays to the end and tries to get every
ball back so it should be a really good match. I've won a couple and lost a
couple so it's been pretty even between us."
