Radwanska's father said his daughter's three-set victory over the No. 1 seed
felt like winning $100 million in a lottery. For the Polish 18-year-old,
however, it meant she had to fulfill an expensive promise.
"Yesterday, I spoke with my sister," she said. "If I will beat her, we will
buy two Louis Vuitton bag, because is so expensive. I have to buy now because
I said that."
"I had nothing to lose," Radwanska said of the Sharapova match. "She was the
favorite and I think she was more nervous. I just played my game."
Radwanska won the first set 6-4, then lost the second set 1-6.
"She destroyed me. But I woke up. After eight games in a row I lost, I made
next six games," she said, clinching the third set, 6-2.
Radwanska and Sharapova are now split 1-1 in head-to-head meetings, both of
which went three sets. Next, Radwanska faces either Nicole Vaidisova or
Shahar Peer in the fourth round. Both women are ranked higher than Radwanska,
but Radwanska is the only Polish player - male or female - ranked in the top
100. It's a lonely job, but she relishes it.
"You know, my father is practicing with me 13 years already," she said. And
her sister, Urszula, is expected to compete in the US Open juniors event. "We
just like family business."
