Opinion: The best and the rest
Monday 8 March, 2004
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The best…
Andrea Pirlo (Milan)
He’s the man that makes Milan tick. Pirlo is no longer just the playmaker
but a key member of the side who never loses the ball. His performance
against Sampdoria illustrated that fact. His goal was simply fabulous,
as was his assist for Kaka’s strike. A unique player in the Italian game.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pippo Inzaghi (Milan)
He may now be 30 but you can see how much joy this game still gives him.
His goal celebration in the 3-1 win against Sampdoria highlighted that fact.
Having put his injuries to one side, expect Inzaghi to end the season on
a high.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stefano Mauri (Brescia)
Brescia boss Gianni De Biasi brought Mauri from Modena with him in the
summer and we know why. He has good feet, intelligence, he can get forward
and help out defensively. He’s a complete player and one that impressed
against Juventus in the 3-2 defeat.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rest…
Fabio Bazzani (Sampdoria)
Some would joke that the Sampdoria striker played his first game for his
new club yesterday – Milan. He failed to trouble the Rossoneri defence
throughout the entire game. A summer switch to the San Siro still beckons
though.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mirko Conte (Sampdoria)
Pippo Inzaghi proved to be a nightmare for Conte yesterday. The defender
could only stop the Italian international with the aid of fouls – most
of which were not punished by referee Trefoloni. It was an afternoon to
forget for Conte who even struggled in the air against Super Pippo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andy Van der Meyde (Inter)
Eight months ago he was one of the best wingers in Europe, today he sits
on the Inter bench. Although he only played a matter of minutes against
Roma, he looks like a tired player and one without character. He’s just
the latest star name to be affected by the ‘Inter illness’.
