Pagelle: Azzurri ratings
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gianluca Zambrotta was one of many key performers in the 3-0 win over
the Ukraine as Italy progressed to the final four.
Gigi Buffon: 7.5
Unemployed during the first half, Buffon made three fine saves
in the second period to deny Andriy Shevchenko and friends.
And people ask why he cost Juventus £32m…
Gianluca Zambrotta: 8
He'd had a good World Cup before Ukraine, but he was back to
his very best in the 3-0 win. A goal, an assist and a goal-line clearance
– one of the protagonists of the evening.
Fabio Cannavaro: 7.5
Italian for ‘No Entry’. The captain was, unsurprisingly,
yet again a rock at the back for the Azzurri.
There's been no better stopper in Germany 2006.
Andrea Barzagli: 6.5
Starting your first World Cup game by marking Andriy Shevchenko
is no easy task, but this youngster proved himself to be a star
of the future. Bravo, bravissimo in fact.
Fabio Grosso: 6
Not exceptional by any means, yet he arguably put in his best display
of the tournament. The penalty he won against Australia
has given him renewed and much-needed confidence.
Andrea Pirlo: 6.5
A good performance by the Milan man even if tiredness seems
to be creeping into his game. Not as influential as in previous ties,
let's hope he's saving his best for Germany.
Gennaro Gattuso: 7
Italy's pint-sized ‘Terminator’ bossed the midfield with
another unsurprisingly exceptional display. His battle with
Michael Ballack in the semi-final is going to be some clash.
Simone Perrotta: 6.5
A superb first half display from the Roma man whose attacking runs
from deep were a constant threat. Dedicated himself to defensive work
after the half-time oranges.
Mauro Camoranesi: 6.5
Returned to the starting line-up and delivered with some sublime dribbling,
even if he did go missing for large chunks of the game.
Linked up well with Zambrotta.
Francesco Totti: 6.5
He's clearly not 100 per cent fit, but did contribute to the game
with some neat tricks from his repertoire. The first two goals developed
from his feet – and his head.
Luca Toni: 7.5
Picked instead of Alberto Gilardino and his fortune finally turned as
his World Cup drought came to an end with a quick one-two.
Welcome back Luca!
Massimo Oddo: No vote
Came on in minute 68 in place of Camoranesi when the game
was basically over. His introduction means that Lippi has now used
all of his outfield players in the tournament.
Simone Barone: No vote
Brought on for Pirlo in the 68th minute to add fresh legs to the midfield.
Cristian Zaccardo: No vote
A late introduction, his first since his own goal against USA,
underlined that boss Marcello Lippi still has faith in him.
Marcello Lippi: 7
Italy ended the game with four full-backs on the pitch,
but Lippi's key decision was made when he penned his starting XI
by fielding a more balanced midfield. Now in the final four,
he wants to go all the way.
