THE Spanish referee whose penalty decision sent Australia crashing out of the
World Cup has been handed a plum tie in the competition's quarter-finals,
despite the furious row that has raged since the Socceroos lost to Italy on
Tuesday.

And last night it was revealed that Luis Medina Cantalejo will get another
game because FIFA do not believe he made a mistake in awarding the
last-minute spotkick that ended the Socceroos' World Cup dreams.

Cantalejo will officiate at the game between Brazil and France in the small
hours of Sunday morning in Frankfurt, despite coming under fire from
Australia's players and fans for his awarding the hugely controversial
penalty against Lucas Neill.

In a double snub to Australian claims of apparent double standards in the
officiating in several of their games, German referee Markus Merk has also
been kept on for the tournament's later stages after FIFA yesterday announced
which 14 of the 26 officials would be sent home now.

澳洲批評在一些他們的比賽中裁判們有很明顯的雙重標準

Merk was involved in a dramatic row with Harry Kewell after the loss to
Brazil, which saw the Liverpool forward charged with abusive behaviour before
the case was scrapped when Merk appeared to change his story.

Last night FIFA referees spokesman Andres Werz told The Daily Telegraph that
far from soccer chiefs believing Cantalejo had erred in awarding Italy the
penalty, they were convinced it was entirely justified.

"No, he did not make a mistake, that is correct. We analysed the penalty
situation and the FIFA experts here in Frankfurt at the referees'
headquarters came to the clear conclusion that this was a penalty," he said.

再次強調在澳洲對義大利那場比賽中裁判判的點球是正確的

Asked whether it was possible Cantalejo could also referee the final, Werz
said: "That's a hypothetical question. He has a quarter-final and that's that
for the moment. I cannot tell you who is doing the semifinals or the final."

除了八強賽的裁判已經決定了以外 對於決賽要派什麼裁判還沒有定論

He did confirm, though, that Merk had not been adversely affected by his
stand-off with Kewell after which the German is alleged to have told Kewell
his World Cup was over.

"As he is appointed for the last eight matches then it is not regarded as a
major incident or he would not have been on the list," Werz said.

Neither referee will be held publicly accountable for their decisions, with
FIFA upholding its strict policy that officials do not comment on individual
incidents.

Last night an insider said the referees had been reminded of the ban on
discussing games in public or private.

Among the referees who will not stay on is Englishman Graham Poll, who
managed to book the same player, Josip Simunic, three times before sending
him off in Australia's draw with Croatia. Poll also missed two clear
penalties for Australia in a performance for which he received a rare public
rebuke from FIFA.

英國籍裁判Graham Poll則是打包回家的裁判之一 他是在澳洲對克羅埃西亞的裁判
在這場比賽中 Poll被認為他少判兩次罰球給澳洲 而發給了Simunic三次黃牌
所以他被送回家了^__________^"
