Lippi to field 4-4-1-1?

Italy take on the Ukraine in the quarter-finals of
the World Cup this evening, but it's still unclear
what team Marcello Lippi will select.
Although there have been suggestions that the Azzurri will again
start with a trident attack, a Football Italia source has suggested
that Lippi is thinking about naming a more prudent line-up.
Despite testing out a Francesco Totti, Luca Toni and
Pippo Inzaghi trident in training, Lippi is pondering ignoring
the latter and playing with just two attackers.
Therefore Lippi could propose a 4-4-1-1 formation for the second time
in the tournament after that system collected a 2-0 win over
the Czech Republic in the final Group E game.
Gigi Buffon will start in goal, guarded by a back four of
Gianluca Zambrotta, Fabio Grosso, Fabio Cannavaro and Andrea Barzagli.
The latter, one of the least experienced in the squad,
steps in given the injury of Alessandro Nesta and
the suspension of Marco Materazzi.
The midfield trio of Simone Perrotta, Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso
could again be joined by Juventus winger Mauro Camoranesi on the right.
In attack, Totti is set to start after losing his place in the side
to Alessandro Del Piero in the last 16 clash versus Australia.
Toni, despite failing to score at the tournament so far,
is understood to have a small advantage over Alberto Gilardino
for the lone striker role.
