Lippi looks ahead to Germany
Monday 3 July, 2006
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Italy boss Marcello Lippi has no doubt about the importance of
the World Cup semi-final with Germany. “It's the match of all matches,”
he stated.
The tactician made the statement at a packed media conference
in Dortmund this evening ahead of Tuesday's last four tie.
And although the host nation are widely considered as favourites,
Lippi insists any result is possible.
“Germany and ourselves have a 50 per cent chance of going through,”
he suggested. “However it ends, it will have been a success.
Lippi
“But I have a good feeling. We are a strong side and
we will show all of our qualities on the field of play such as
the value of our players, determination, grit, the desire to win.”
Jurgen Klinsmann's men are confident though, especially given the fact
that they have won 13 and drawn one of 14 internationals played
at the Westfalonstadion.
Yet Lippi seems unconcerned by that figure or the 60,000 German fans
expected to encourage their troops tomorrow evening from the stands.
“Germany have a good record at this stadium, but I've won here
on two occasions with Juve when we beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and 3-1,”
he said. “ I hope there is a third. Anything can happen.
Dortmund,
“The crowd? It matters not, I have expert players who have played
in loads of away games.
“Anyhow, we won't feel alone. We'll play our own game
in the knowledge that millions of Italians will be watching us.”
Germany did receive a massive blow on Monday, though,
when key midfielder Torsten Frings was banned for jabbing Julio Cruz
in the face during the fracas which marred the Germany-Argentina tie.
“We didn't lift a finger when it came to Frings,” assured the Coach.
“We were left stunned when we were informed of the ban.
“But we too have lost players on the way such as [Alessandro] Nesta,
[Daniele] De Rossi, [Gianluca] Zambrotta and [Gennaro] Gattuso.
“It is clear that he is an important player,
but their desire to win will compensate for his absence.
Germany have shown that they are a great squad and
the absence of one man won't change their organisation.”
Although Lippi is remaining optimistic, he has suggested that
he would rather not see the tie decided on penalties.
“Germany would be favourites should it go to spot-kicks seeing as
they never miss. I've lost a few shoot-outs in my time, even
if I've won some too,” he stated.
Lippi
Lippi was also asked what his future held seeing as
his present deal comes to an end once Germany 2006 is over.
“I've said it all along, as soon as the World Cup is over,
we will discuss our options,” he concluded.
