Pagelle: Azzurri ratings
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Campioni del mondo! Italy triumphed on penalties in the World Cup Final
to become the most successful European side of all time.
We rate the Azzurri heroes.
Gigi Buffon: 7.5
Looked as solid as ever despite being rarely tested
but reacted brilliantly when called upon.
His tip over the bar from Zidane's header showed
why he is the best in the world.
Gianluca Zambrotta: 7
Another storming performance from the Juventus full-back
as he continued to fly up and down the wing even when many of
his teammates were tiring.
Fabio Cannavaro: 7.5
Not as good as his all-conquering display against Germany,
but still an unmovable rock at the heart of the Azzurri defence
making a number of crucial tackles.
Marco Materazzi: 7
Was involved in every aspect of the game. France's penalty
was harshly awarded against him, but he made amends by scoring.
Sadly may be best remembered for Zidane's red card.
Fabio Grosso: 6.5
Was excellent going forward in the first half but was forced back
after the break. Visibly tired towards the end but sealed the win
with a perfect penalty.
Andrea Pirlo: 7.5
His set pieces were a constant threat and caused panic
in the France defence. Was the creative outlet for the Azzurri
and further highlighted his excellent relationship with Gattuso.
Gennaro Gattuso: 8
An absolutely outstanding performance from the midfield warrior.
Broke down everything France could throw at him and moved the ball
out of defence brilliantly. A true Azzurri hero!
Simone Perrotta: 6
Made no real mistakes but struggled to make any serious headway
despite some good link-up with Grosso. Was substituted to
accommodate Iaquinta.
Mauro Camoranesi: 6.5
Played well without causing a real threat to France.
Brushed aside doubts over his temperament by staying cool throughout
and providing a vital outlet on the wing.
Francesco Totti: 6
Not the performance that had been hoped for but still a solid game
and helped out his teammates well. He won't be the hero but worked hard
for the result before being substituted.
Luca Toni: 7
Was often isolated as the lone striker but held the ball up excellently
and came close to scoring when his header slammed against the crossbar.
A solid if unspectacular display.
Daniele De Rossi: 7
Was brought on for friend and teammate Totti and helped Gattuso
mop up the midfield. Made up for his red card against USA
by slotting home his penalty.
Vincenzo Iaquinta: 6.5
Came on to give the team more pace down the wings and accomplished
that task as Italy tried to hit France on the counter-attack.
Was a constant threat but lacked the final pass.
Alex Del Piero: 6.5
Banished all the demons of previous tournaments
by banging home his penalty. It wasn't his best display
but he worked tirelessly and provided a rare threat in extra-time.
Marcello Lippi: 7.5
Tried to push the players forward by bringing on Del Piero
and Iaquinta when many would have settled down for rearguard battle.
Confirmed his worldwide status as a master tactician.
