U21: Gentile ready for debut

Davide Biondini replaces the injured Alberto Aquilani,
as Coach Claudio Gentile prepares for Italy's opener
in the European Under-21 Championships.
Biondini頂替受傷的 Aquilani進入大名單，義大利首戰丹麥。

“I have asked the lads to clear their minds of any other concerns.
Naturally, our objective is to win the trophy,”
said the tactician ahead of Wednesday’s debut against Denmark.

“We prepared well for this appointment,
but now the moment has come to prove ourselves on the pitch
and confirm all the good work we have done to get here.
This is the most important match of the season.”

The Azzurrini qualified for the tournament with flying colours
and have an enviable pedigree in this competition,
winning five of the last seven editions and coming
into this event as reigning Champions.

The first stage sees Italy placed in Group B with Denmark,
Ukraine and Holland. The first two go through to the semi-finals
and the Final will be in Porto on June 4.

“We already faced the Danes two years ago in the play-offs and
few things have changed in their side. They are physically strong,
have good individual talents and will do everything to impress.
The important thing is not to lose the opening game.”

Gentile has been forced to change his plans,
as Roma midfielder Aquilani has pulled out with a right knee injury.
His replacement is Reggina man Biondini, who has played
28 Serie A games in his career, while Raffaele Palladino is expected
to partner Fiorentina's Giampaolo Pazzini upfront.

“I honestly thought Aquilani would recover,
which is why I waited until the last minute
to ask UEFA for the substitution,” added the Coach.

The European Under-21 Championships kick off tonight with Group A.
Hosts Portugal take on France, while Germany face Lecce striker
Mirko Vucinic's Serbia & Montenegro.
