U21: Gentile's boys held in Greece

Claudio Gentile’s Azzurrini were held to a 1-1 draw in Greece as they
continue the warm-up for the European Championships.
Coach Gentile called in five new faces, but Parma midfielder Alessandro
Rosina was the only debutante to start the match. Injuries forced Alberto
Gilardino and Emiliano Moretti out of the side.
The home side opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Kapetanovic
charged into the box on the counter-attack and was hauled down by goalkeeper
Marco Amelia. Salpigidis converted the resulting penalty despite Amelia
getting a hand to it.
The Italians tried to fight back, but found it difficult to turn their
possession into clear cut chances.
In first half stoppage time Abaris brought down Brescia’s Andrea
Caracciolo and allowed Giuseppe Sculli to draw level.
The game took on a new feel after the break as Italy came out fighting
and brought a series of fine saves out of Abaris.
Reggina debutante Giandomenico Mesto and Parma’s Marco Donadel stepped
in to bolster the midfield, while they were soon followed by fellow new
boys Chiellini and Del Nero.
The impressive Rosina had a couple of good scoring opportunities that
whistled just wide, while the goalkeeper performed a desperate reaction
save on Caracciolo.
“It was a good test,” confirmed Gentile, “with some fine performances
and lots of first touch football.”
This is the first of three international friendlies for Gentile’s side,
as they travel to Portugal in March and take on Sweden on April 27.
“The trip to Portugal will be a very important step on the road to the
European Championships. I hope to include some more Serie B players in
the squad, as it isn’t fair to hold back talented youngsters based on
their club position.”
