THIS is the luxury hideaway where the man who shattered Australia's World Cup
dream has been in lockdown, unaccountable to Socceroo fans for his gaffe.

Under-fire Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo, whose decision to award Italy
a hugely controversial last-minute penalty knocked Australia out of the World
Cup, has been hidden behind a wall of silence at the opulent Hotel Kempinski
Gravenbruch in Neu-Isenburg outside Frankfurt where the tournament officials
are based.

Despite accusations from Australian players that they had been robbed of a
place in the competition's quarter-finals, governing body FIFA has refused to
offer any comment on the referee's performance, let alone any criticism.

Yesterday, with police patrol cars guarding the hotel, attempts to speak to
Cantalejo in person were politely but firmly rebuffed at the hotel gates.

With FIFA due to reveal overnight which of the 21 referees would be kept on
for the tournament's later stages, two World Cup-marked coaches left the
grounds yesterday, it's thought taking those referees who have been released
to the airport.

Earlier, FIFA's refereeing co-ordinator Andreas Wurz insisted the organisation
never commented on referees' performances, and said no decision had been made
on whether Cantalejo would receive a further game in the competition.

"It is not FIFA policy to comment on referees' performances and we will not be

All attempts to hear the views of Cantalejo about the decision to give Italy
such a controversial penalty have been blocked since the game on Tuesday
morning, which ended with Italy's winning penalty after Fabio Grosso was
allegedly fouled by Lucas Neill, a decision subsequently criticised around the
world.

All requests for interviews have been turned down amid high security at the
base camp where all the referees have been holed up since the start of the tour
nament.

It's understood all the referees have been instructed not to discuss specific
incidents in games, whether officiated by them or their colleagues.
