Fiorentina close in on Serie A

Enrico Fantini's lone strike has put Fiorentina 90 minutes away from a
return to Serie A after they defeated Perugia at the Stadio Curi.
This season a play-off has been introduced between the fourth from bottom
side in the top flight and the sixth-placed Serie B team. Perugia and
Fiorentina therefore battled it out for the one remaining slot in the
new expanded 20-team Serie A.
The first leg was staged at Perugia’s Stadio Renato Curi, while the decider
will be at the Artemio Franchi on June 20.
The Viola had a strong start and took the lead with what could prove to be
a crucial away goal after just ten minutes. Enrico Fantini sprung the offside
trap on Gaetano Fontana’s through ball and toe-poked it past Zeljko Kalac.
There were fears over Fiorentina’s goal-scoring potential without injured
hitman Christian Rigano and Greek international Zisis Vryzas, but those were
calmed almost immediately.
Perugia hit back with a Ze Maria free kick, but Fantini nearly doubled his
tally when his swerving effort skimmed the woodwork.
Serse Cosmi’s men complained throughout the season that referees mistreated
them and there were protests when Ze Maria fell under pressure from Alfonso
Camorani.
Emiliano Mondonico’s men were extremely dangerous on the counter-attack and
Kalac rushed off his line to cut off another Fantini chance, but at the other
end of the field Cejas was forced into a spectacular save to keep out Marco
Di Loreto’s bullet header.
Former Coventry striker Jay Bothroyd was disappointing and made way for
Franco Brienza at the start of the second half.
Brienza and Ze Maria aimed long range efforts at Cejas, but they needed more
firepower and threw on ex-Juve forward Marcelo Zalayeta.
Fabrizio Ravanelli put in more effort than anyone and it took a crucial
Savini challenge to stop him making the most of Christian Manfredini's cross.
Ravanelli thought he had drawn level 15 minutes from time, but the goal was
disallowed for Christian Obodo's foul on Cejas.
At the other end, Carrus set up a glorious opportunity for Cristian Maggio,
but the youngster's first touch let him down as the goal beckoned.
Cejas tipped long-range efforts from Zalayeta and Manfredini over the bar as
Perugia's last efforts ended in heartbreak and Kalac again rushed off his
line to halt Fantini's counter-attack.
There was also the first leg of a play-off to avoid relegation into Serie C1.
Bari have the upper hand with a slender 1-0 home win, decided by Salvatore
Bruno's strike on 58 minutes.
